Review: Engelbert Humperdinck & Janet Devlin Release Cover Of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”!

Engelbert Humperdinck & Janet Devlin have teamed up to deliver a sublime cover of the Elvis classic “Can’t Help Falling In Love”.

Featured on Engelbert’s brand new cover EP ‘Sentiments’, this stunning version was a release year’s in the making. Originally made famous by Elvis in his film Blue Hawaii, “Can’t Help Falling In Love” was Janet’s grandfather’s favourite song. During the week he sadly passed, Janet performed the song on The X Factor UK, which swiftly won the hearts of the nation & has become a fan favourite for this gifted artist ever since.

After watching her performance on the show, Engelbert was wowed by Janet’s rendition of the song & thus formed an invisible bond between the two. Three years ago, Janet & Engelbert were introduced for the first time after his show at the Royal Court Theatre, where they discussed their shared love for the song, which led to them planning a performance together during Engelbert’s show at the London’s Palladium in May of this year.

When COVID-19 led the cancellation of the concert, the pair vowed to record their version of the song remotely for Engelberts EP ‘Sentiments’. The song features a powerful connection for both artists with them dedicating their version to someone special.

Speaking about the release, Engelbert said “I have always adored Can’t Help Falling In Love by my good friend Elvis when he recorded it almost 60 years ago,”

He continued “This year when the opportunity arrived to record it as a duet with the incredible Janet Devlin I was intrigued as there is about the same age difference between us as to when it was first performed by Elvis and his leading lady in Blue Hawaii.

“Janet and I have performed it not as a love song, but as a loving tribute to people very near and dear to our hearts. I am dedicating it to my wife of 54 years, Patricia. Janet is dedicating it to her grandfather Michael. Together, we have created a new version which we believe packs an emotional punch with its hopeful message of love… especially in these difficult times.”

Janet said “This song holds so much emotion for me which spans nearly a decade. Performing it with Engelbert on stage would have been the icing on the cake, so you can imagine how disappointed we were when that couldn’t happen. But when I heard that we might be able to record it together, albeit remotely, I jumped at the chance! It might seem unconventional but the pairing really works, we were able to alternate and sing the lines that mean the most to us and of course, he’s an utter legend which made the experience all the more amazing!”

This song perfectly combines the soulful textures behind Janet’s angelic vocals alongside Engelbert’s rich & pleasing baritone, which help’s to create a captivating energy that catches your full attention from the very first listen.
