NYC-based pop singer-songwriter Ren Genevieve takes listeners on a journey through the ups and downs of a love story with the brand new EP, Everything I Never Said.
This EP is a six-track project that traces the full arc of a relationship, from the excitement of possibility and vulnerability to heartbreak, self-preservation, and eventual acceptance. The songs don’t shy away from the complex emotions hidden behind every corner in a relationship, and the result is an emotionally drawing pop experience.
Ren has kindly taken the time to chat with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution about the brand new EP and you can find the full interview below.
Hey Ren, thank you for taking the time to chat with me today. You just released the brand-new EP ‘Everything I Never Said’. How did the inspiration for this EP come together?
Hey! Thanks for having me, I’m so excited to chat with you today! The inspiration for the EP really began with the title song, which came from something I said a lot at the time: “If you think this song’s about you, it probably is.” After I wrote the title song, I started thinking about how the experiences we have shape us, and how we go back to them in our minds the way that people revisit artwork in museums. I was fascinated by how we recontextualise the moments in a relationship, both in real-time while we’re still in it. And in hindsight, once it’s over. So, I wanted to write about a relationship from that perspective—chronicling the rise and fall and the aftermath.
This EP follows the journey of a relationship, from the excitement of possibility and vulnerability to heartbreak, self-preservation, and eventual acceptance. What did it mean to you to create this journey in the EP?
While making this EP, I was really interested in perspective, the influence of narrators, and how the order in which someone tells you a story changes how you see it. I spent a lot of time thinking about how these songs would come together to tell this story: the track order, what each song was actually saying, and what they said when placed side by side. I wanted to tell this story in an uplifting way, and to not get stuck in the heartbreak. So, it felt most natural to me to tell the story from beginning to end, following the rise and fall of a relationship and finding your voice in the aftermath. But if you listen to it backwards, it becomes a story about a person haunted by what was lost. That was intentional.
The EP features two brand-new songs: “Moonlight” and “The Last Time.” What inspired you to add these to the EP?
These songs are really important aspects of the storytelling. I wanted to capture all of the moments that make the emotions meaningful, and show the cost of what is being lost alongside what’s being gained. “Moonlight” captures the dreaminess of that first rush of really falling for someone and wanting to stay in that moment forever, and not wanting to lose that feeling. That moment before everything stops feeling perfect and fated. “The Last Time” shifts that perspective. It is after you know that this isn’t going to work, so you have that one last moment before you reveal the truth. It’s bittersweet: choosing to feel everything, but knowing it won’t stay.
Were there any songs that did not make the EP, which we could see released in the future?
Perhaps 🙂 Sometimes, there are songs I’m not sure about in the moment, and then I’ll listen back a few months later and think, “Wait, I actually really like this. There’s something here.” My relationship with songs can shift over time. And some songs are just waiting for the right project and the right moment.
What does this EP personally mean to you?
This EP was a huge moment for me. It includes some major career milestones that I will never forget. Recording and producing this album with Josh Monroy was an incredible experience, and actually my first time in a real recording studio. These songs started as voice memos and demo recordings in my bedroom, so it was fun to hear them come to life in a whole new way. Writing them was really cathartic and helped me to grow as a person. I’m so incredibly proud of these songs. The whole process of creating this EP was so special, and I am so excited to share it!
If listeners could take a message away from this EP, what would you like it to be?
The things that are left unsaid are just as important as the things that are said, and how you look back on them shapes who you become. The same moment can be a heartbreak or the moment you found your voice. It all depends on when you look back and how you tell it. If one of these songs says something you never got to say, or sounds like a page out of your own story, I hope it feels like yours now.
Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
