Interview: Emilia Quinn Discusses Her Upcoming Double Release “This World // M.I.L.A”!

Hot of the heels of her second EP ‘Firecracker’, upcoming singer-songwriter Emilia Quinn is planning a double single release in the form of “This World // M.I.L.A.” on December 4th.

This forthcoming double release looks to be recorded & released in the space of only a few weeks, with Emilia recording the entire process & sharing it with fans during the build-up to the official publication.

Emilia has kindly taken some time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution about her upcoming release. Find out what she had to say below.

Hey Emilia, thank you so much for agreeing to this interview. Can you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourself?

Emilia: Thanks for having me! So I’m Emilia Quinn, I’m a Roots music artist based in the North of England. I’ve been playing music since I was 6 years old when I started piano and then progressed onto guitar and more instruments over the years.

When did you first discover your passion for music?

Emilia: I think when I was 6 years old I started to find a skill for it, I won a competition in year 3 for piano in my age category haha but it’s one of those things i always went back to after trying various other hobbies so I ended up sticking to it!

Have you always known that a career within music was something that you wanted to pursue?

Emilia: I did want to be a marine biologist when I was younger but throughout 6th form music grew on me a lot more and I took music tech A-Level which is when I really decided that I was going to pursue a music career.

How would you describe your musical style to someone unfamiliar with your music?

Emilia: I find it hard to use any other label than Roots music because I’m not just one thing. What I mean by Roots music is a combination of Blues, Country, Americana, Rock and a little bit of folk. It’s relatively wide-ranging so if someone doesn’t like one EP they might enjoy another. My music is always evolving along with my life journey and what I write reflects that.

You are about to release the double single “This World // M.I.L.A”, which you decided to record & publish in the space of four weeks. How did this idea come together?

Emilia: I was having a night off, few drinks, with my partner and she was talking about these two songs which are so relevant at the moment and both have messages which are strong in a normal world and have a little more kick to them at the moment. She made some very good points about how they would be well received in our current global situation. But with the short time-frame I had to put a bit of thought into how I could pull it off as the songs hadn’t even been recorded yet. As I only have a small home studio and we were in lockdown at the time I settled on acoustic versions. These actually turned out brilliantly and really create a focus on the story of the songs themselves and created something really raw.

If recording & publishing the release in four weeks wasn’t enough, you have also decided to recorded vlogs to show every step of the process before the release. What also inspired you to document the process behind recording?

Emilia: Haha, yeah I’m a little crazy so why not let people see the craziness behind the scenes!

Jokes aside, it’s not something that usually gets shared and takes an immense amount of different skills to pull off successfully. With the ‘unviable’ sentiment flying around I just wanted to make a point of how much work an independent music career takes and profit doesn’t always equal work and skill.

It also provided me with a promo strategy as I didn’t have much time to come up with an elaborate strategy haha!

How would you compare the creative process behind this double single to your previous releases?

Emilia: Sharing everything, like, EVERYTHING, is definitely different. It’s also pretty much totally done by me, the recording and mixing was me and I sent it to my mastering engineer Rich for a polished touch and some fresh ears.

And where I would have spent roughly a year writing, recording, planning etc, for a single release, this one has been done in the time-frame of a month. In some ways it’s quite nice because I can’t overthink anything but it has been a whirlwind!

How have your family & friends reacted to this upcoming release, or have you been keeping it secret?

Emilia: I actually told the world pretty much as soon as the decision was made so nothing about this has been kept a secret !

What does this release personally mean to you?

Emilia: Like I said before the messages in the songs are super relevant to our current world.

But, personally, being a songwriting is an amazing opportunity to spread messages of what I believe in and make deep, personal connections with a variety of people. I feel very lucky to be in this situation where my tracks are being streamed across the world and I’m getting airplay in several countries and getting great feedback from people from all walks of life.

If one person feels like they’re seen and heard through my songs, that’s success to me.

If listeners could take anything away from this release, what would you like it to be?

Emilia: #MakeTimeToShareALittleGoodKarma !

Be kind, you don’t know what someone’s day, week, month, life has been like. Words carry a lot of weight and are a very easy weapon to use.

Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?

Emilia: I hope you enjoy the songs, they are available to pre-save on Spotify and iTunes and Amazon!
