Emerging R&B songstress Sofia Evangelina shares her vocally versatile musical gift with the world through a variety of award-winning releases, which have swiftly caught the attention of critics & listeners alike.
Not long ago, Sofia unveiled her latest single, “Get Outta My Head”, which centres around what it’s like to begin to fall unwillingly/uncontrollably in love, & all the emotions that follow.
Sofia has kindly taken the time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding her latest release, along with getting to know more about the artist behind the music.
Hey Sofia, thank you so much for agreeing to this interview. Can you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourself?
Sofia: Thank you for having me 🙂 My name is Sofia Evangelina, I’m a 19 y/o Canadian R&B singer with Russian and French heritage. Some call me ‘A Wild Rose In The Desert’ because I was born in Alberta (tagged Wild Rose country) and now live in Dubai.
When did you first discover your passion for music?
Sofia: I have loved music since I can remember. I was singing before I could talk and danced to everything with rhythm including a tumbling drying machine. I was talking lessons from early on but I started evolving at age 7 when my coach discovered I had a “jazzy” voice.
Gradually my mom introduced me to the greats of blues, jazz, and Motown and as I grew I had many other influences from vocal divas Etta James and Nina Simon to hip hop to…
Have you always known that you wanted to pursue a career within the music industry?
Sofia: Yes! I’ve known who I was and what I wanted from the beginning. Like, I always joke that from the moment I came outta the womb I was saying “come on people! We’ve got work to do!” Haha. However, growing up I was a fireball. I became invested in a professional sporting career to output this energy while balancing my passion for the arts, until I could no longer bridge the two worlds and ultimately chose a path of an artist.
How would you currently describe your musical style?
Sofia: At the moment my music is definitely R&B, but what’s coming out next is gonna be more and more urban, with lots of fusion, some urban pop, R&B, hip hop and then we’re going to go down into kind of, well, something unorthodox, my team call it alien genre, something unheard of.
You recently released the new single “Get Outta My Head”. How did the idea for this song come together?
Sofia: Musically, it began with this weird, trinket kind of melody that I was playing around with on the piano. I never thought it would be used for a song, cause it sounded so primitive to me, but my collaborator composer heard it and he was like “that’s dope” and then we added on this ‘James Bond’ kind of vibe and melody for the verses and the marriage was surprisingly seamless.
How would you compare the creative process behind this song to your earlier musical releases?
Sofia: I always say the process changes, it’s so unique for each song which is the beauty behind creation for me. ‘Smile’ was written about the cathartic power of a smile, it was written very easily, practically in one hour. ‘Endure’ was a very personal song tapping into the mentality that I had to develop to make it through the hardest experiences in my life. It took multiple trips to Toronto to get it right because I was not satisfied in the beginning. ‘Get Outta My Head’ was written based on a montage of my own experiences while also tapping into the stories of those around me to write a universal tale of stepping into the brink of love and its an intense realm of volatile feelings.
Did you always plan to release “Get Outta My Head” as a single?
Sofia: Yes, we have an album in the works for 2023 but “Get Outta My Head” and the following few records are definitely meant to take their own spotlight as singles.
What does this song personally mean to you?
Sofia: Its meaning has changed, When I wrote it, it wasn’t about anyone, in particular, then, later on, I managed to manifest this situation into my life per se, so the song took on a whole new meaning, even for me.
If listeners could take anything away from this song, what would you like it to be?
Sofia: We can’t escape love and its winding maze, but in the process, we can truly discover who we are. Also, to be precise the invisible character in the song occupies your heart more than your head.
What are some of the things you enjoy outside of music?
Sofia: Acting and modelling. Most of all, I really love spending time with my mom, she’s my best friend. I love being with my family and with my puppy, she’s my little therapy angel dog. I love surfing, kickboxing, horses, travelling, a million other things and I mean, come on, a girl’s gotta love her shopping.
If you perform a duet with anyone in the world, who would you choose & why?
Sofia: Pop Smoke, if he was alive. I love his voice, his flow and his approach to meticulous, deep productions. I actually do lots of collaborations. And in the near future, I look forward to the days ahead working with so many artists, but the first couple of artists that pop to mind are Drake and El Grande Toto.
What three words best describe you?
Sofia: Untameable , On-A-Mission, & Happy.
If you could possess any superpower, what would you choose & why?
Sofia: Eat unlimited food and never get fat. 😂 Other than that I think my music should be my superpower that able to change the world to the better.
Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
Sofia: Always stay true to yourself. The times change and the only way to true fulfilment is to stay in alignment with your values system.
