Upcoming country music star & former American Idol Season 18 alumni Megan Knight has swiftly caught the attention of music fans & critics alike through a host of musical releases that have received an immense wave of high accolade.
At the age of 14, Megan released her first original three-song EP, which quickly caught the attention of Grammy-winning songwriters/producers and engineers in Nashville, TN & Muscle Shoals, AL. She was awarded the 93.7 WSTW’s New Artist of The Year, independent artist music award.
Not long ago, Megan unveiled the highly anticipated brand new single “My Drama”, along with an official music video. Megan has kindly taken the time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding her latest musical release & you can find the full interview below.
Hey Megan, thank you so much for this interview. Can you start by telling us about when you first discovered your passion for music?
Megan: I’ve had a passion for music ever since I can remember; there was never a time in my life when music wasn’t the forefront of everything. There’s always been a radio blasting around my house, interviews, and documentaries on TV about musicians, and I also had family members in bands that I would always go out and see.
Have you always known that you wanted to pursue a career within the music scene?
Megan: I actually naturally fell into this career, to be honest. I taught myself guitar as a hobby and then my Mom asked if I would perform at an open mic for her. I did and the owners asked if they could hire me, that was the moment that changed my life forever. That gig led to another then another, it definitely was my life calling.
How would you describe your musical style to someone unfamiliar with your music?
Megan: Alternative Pop Country / Americana / Roots.
You recently released the new single “My Drama”, which sounds amazing by the way. How did the idea for this song come together?
Megan: Thank you! I wanted to write something real, relatable and raw and I hope it resonates and helps listeners through whatever situation they may be going through. I first came up with the line “together we’re a work of art,” and that’s what got the whole song going. I wanted to write about how love isn’t the fairytale we grew up dreaming of from movies, but rather a masterpiece of dark and light moments that create a vivid, powerful and expansive dynamic.
Did you always plan to release “My Drama” as a single?
Megan: Yes, we definitely always wanted to release “My Drama” as a single. This is the title track of my upcoming EP.
If listeners could take any message away from this song, what would you like it to be?
Megan: To embrace the chaos in life. Life is a series of lessons to elevate your soul, there’s beauty in some losses of innocence … losing your tendency to be naïve is important. In the music video, you can see the depiction of reality taking over ignorance. I think life is a constant challenge and it’s all about hitting low lows to reach higher highs. This single “My Drama,” is actually foreshadowing the story I’m going to tell throughout my EP, so I’m excited.
You released an official video alongside the single, how do you feel the video reflects the song in your own opinion?
Megan: This video depicts the loss of innocence. It starts in a place of pure ignorance… ignorance is bliss. It’s easy to go along wearing rose-coloured glasses in life. The video opens with me in shades, dressed innocently and cleanly to depict that. The reality of society eventually hits; the video shows the wear society has on a soul over time. From a woman who would never turn to smoking, drinking… just endless vices in general… she eventually turns to them all. There’s a complete spiral downhill. A complete loss of identity. The message of the track itself was written from a place of realization that love is not the fairytale we were introduced to as a kid. I think what love truly is, is digging into the shadow side of the one you love and learning how to love all of it. Relationships even force you to face yourself and new sides you didn’t even realize existed before. We all have demons and trauma in our lives. I believe the video for “My Drama” enhances the listeners’ interpretation of the lyrics.
What are some of the things you enjoy outside of music?
Megan: Running, yoga, pilates, going to sports events, dinner with friends and family, shopping and watching reality tv.
What message would you offer to someone who was looking to pursue a career within the music industry?
Megan: Be yourself unapologetically and don’t be afraid to try new things, they will push you to grow. Never stop learning.
Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
