Interview: Natalie Shay Discusses The Release Of Her Debut EP ‘NAKED’!

Upcoming UK based indie-pop/rock musician Natalie Shay has been creating a name for herself throughout the music scene with her critically acclaimed charismatic musical style & passion-filled vocals.

Earlier this year, Natalie released her highly-anticipated debut EP ‘Naked’, which has swiftly gained substantial momentum from across the globe.

Natalie has kindly taken the time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution about her debut EP & the recent release of the official video for the EP’s self-titled track “Naked”.

Hey Natalie, thank you so much for agreeing to this interview. Can you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourself?

Natalie: Hey! My name is Natalie Shay im a 21-year-old indie pop/rock artist and guitarist from North London!

When did you first discover your passion for music & knew that it was a career that you wanted to pursue?

Natalie: I started playing my original music live around London when i was 13 and over the next couple years i picked up a few awards for my music, this was so humbling and in a sense was the confirmation and confidence boost i needed to leave my school and join the brit school at 14 in the goal of doing music as my career! I’ve loved every minute of it

How would you describe your musical style to someone unfamiliar with your music?

Natalie: I would say its indie pop/rock, however most of my songs are written on an acoustic guitar so when stripped back, all of my songs are very singer/songwriter style. In terms of production i’m really into 80s style production mixed with 2020 pop prod and guitars.

Earlier this year you released your debut EP ‘Naked’. How did the idea to create this EP come together?

Natalie: I never actually went into it with the idea for an EP. I released “People Like Me” last year as a single, then things kinda panned out into me releasing an EP. The first step was deciding which songs would be on it, we already had one track so I wanted to pick the others so that they all shared a similar theme and captured a certain time in my life.

What would you consider to be the main inspiration behind the EP?

Natalie: Everything on the EP is about me and my experiences over 2018-2019. I really want my lyrics to be relatable and real, hopefully some other people share these experiences.

How did your family & friends react to the EP?

Natalie: They were very excited too! My parents had been listening to it for months before it came out haha, but my friends were also very supportive.

What does the EP personally mean to you?

Natalie: It will always be exceptionally special to me as it was my first EP! It also marks a very strange time in my life, releasing an EP in 2020 at the very beginning of the first UK lockdown for Covid-19 was a very strange experience. However lyrically, visually and musically, this EP captures everything i’ve felt and and experienced and wanted to express myself through in the past couple years.

You recently released the official video for the EP’s self-titled track. How did the idea to create the video come together?

Natalie: The song itself is about fear of commitment. Despite being happy, the worry that you’re not ready to ‘settle down’. We basically captured this in the video in the most obvious way possible … a runaway bride! We were meant to shoot the video back in March but didn’t get round to it until August, which at least meant the beach scenes weren’t as cold. 😉

Do you have any further releases planned for the near future that you can currently tell us about?

Natalie: Definitely! Early next year. Stay tuned. 🙂

Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?

Natalie: I would just say I hope my lyrics resonate with some of the listeners, I try to write about everything I feel strongly. I really hope there’s a song that listeners can relate to at different stages of their lives. And please go check out my EP!!
