Indie-pop Berlin-based singer-songwriter Lydia Ford unveils the brand new single “Burning Out” from the upcoming album ‘Faking It’, set for release in September 2023.
The album was born from a collaboration with producer Sam Stevenson during Berlin’s lockdown in 2021. Lydia’s songwriting is primarily informed by her own experiences, with a theme of being in your twenties and struggling to get your life together.
Co-written alongside Matt Attard, This latest single describes the feeling of being overwhelmed, stressed, & burnt out. The song showcases an honest & introspective glance at their songwriting talents.
Lydia has kindly taken the time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding the release of “Burning Out” & the upcoming album ‘Faking It’. You can find the full interview below.
Hey Lydia, thank you so much for this interview. Can you start by introducing yourself to readers who might be unfamiliar with your music?
Lydia: My name is Lydia Ford and I’m an indie pop artist from Ireland who’s based in Berlin.
When did you first discover your passion for music?
Lydia: I loved music from a very young age. My mother always had a radio on and my sister and I watched a lot of Disney movies and musicals. It was when I got my first guitar at the age of nine that I became really invested in music and started writing songs. It continued throughout my teenage years into playing in bands and hasn’t stopped since!
How would you currently describe your musical style?
Lydia: Genre wise I think it fits in the indie pop bracket, but there’s some singer songwriter elements to the storytelling. I listened to a lot of pop punk as a teenager and some of that seeps in too!
You just released the new single “Burning Out”. How did the idea for this song come together?
Lydia: I was in a writing session and I knew I had to go home after and finish up a lot of work. I was literally feeling burned out, so writing a song about it felt like a good way to process it!
You wrote this song alongside Matt Attard. How did you find the process of working on this song together?
Lydia: Matt and I wrote together over Zoom. It was our first time working together and we both have similar music backgrounds and interests so it felt like a good fit. He’s such a lovely guy and made it easy to be vulnerable when it came to lyric writing.
What does this song personally mean to you?
Lydia: It means a lot. Like a lot of people, I’ve felt myself caught in a cycle of burn out for years and I think the Pandemic took that to a new level. Writing and performing the song is sort of a release of that emotion and also a way to connect with other people experiencing the same thing.
What message would you like listeners to take from this song?
Lydia: A sense of solidarity! We’re all in this together so maybe we can change it for the better.
This song is gearing up for the anticipated release of your upcoming album “Faking It”. What are some of the things that listeners can await from the album?
Lydia: The content of the album is kind of two halves. There are the songs like Burning Out and my previous single, Sink or Swim, that deal with being overwhelmed and stressed and struggling to make decisions. Then, in stark contrast, there are the songs about falling in love! I think overall the album captures the journey through my 20s. Sonically there’s catchy pop melodies and sparkly synths but also some gritty guitars and punchy drums.
The album was born from a collaboration with producer Sam Stevenson during Berlin’s lockdown in 2021. What did it mean to you to create this album & what does it mean to share it with the world?
Lydia: I had never considered making an album, despite releasing music for years, before working with Sam. I think the songs we wrote & collaborated on together felt so true to me that I knew they were part of a bigger project and I had more to say. I’m so proud of the album and how I’ve grown making it, so to share it with the world is a scary but exciting thought. I hope everyone can get some comfort from it.
Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
