INTERVIEW: CHLSY Discuss Their Single “555” & Upcoming Album “Quantum Entanglement”!

Charismatic Nashville-based rock group CHLSY continue breaking barriers with their 90s-influenced musical style & unique lyrical storytelling.

Made up of front-woman Chelsea Gilliland, bassist Sean Swanson and drummer Sawyer Dodds, this talented trio embrace their creativity to produce a host of ear-catching releases that have swiftly made an impression on the music scene.

Not long ago, CHLSY unveiled the single “555”, which was written alongside musician Jon Ezzo in anticipation of their upcoming album “Quantum Entanglement”, on September 9th.

Chelsea has kindly taken the time to talk with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding “555” & their upcoming album release. You can find the full interview below.

Hey CHLSY, thank you so much for this interview. Can you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourself?

Chelsea: For sure! Thank you so much for this opportunity. I was born in Boston, MA but spent most of my developmental high school years in California. I currently live in Nashville, TN with Sawyer and Sean as well as our friend, Kyle.

How did the idea to create the band first come together?

Chelsea: Sawyer and I met during freshman year and began playing music together. Sawyer was also friends with Sean. Fast forward to four years: Sean, Saw, and Kyle were looking for another roommate and so was I. So, basically, I met Sean when we moved in together as roommates.

When did you first discover your passion for music?

Chelsea: I first discovered my passion for music when I was five. I played classical piano and I remember sitting at the piano for hours every day. Actually, it wasn’t always fun because, for some reason, my perfectionist toddler brain would not allow me to leave the piano until I played the piece I was learning perfectly. If I made any mistake at all or played any note too loud or too quiet, I would have to start over. This got really difficult when I started learning six-minute-long pieces. So I guess music really was more of an obsession at that point in my life.

How would you currently describe your musical style?

Chelsea: Currently, I make rock/grunge music. It’s heavily inspired by the sounds of the ‘90s.

You recently released the new single “555”. How did the idea for this song come together?

Chelsea: I actually wrote ‘555’ in about 15 minutes the exact morning I broke up with my boyfriend. Truthfully, I did not want to break up with him, but I felt I had to. I knew we would get back together in time, but at that moment, I had so much inner work and healing to do. My previous relationship really messed me up and I didn’t want to be a walking red flag in the new relationship. So we spent some time apart and ended up getting back together. We both agree that the time apart really helped us both to grow and to realize how much we care for each other.

How would you compare the creative process behind this song to your earlier releases?

Chelsea: The creative process for ‘555’ was quite similar to ‘No (Hard) Feelings.’ I just wrote exactly what I was feeling and let the words flow through me. Both songs have a similar vibe.

Did you always plan to release “555”?

Chelsea: Actually, we had written another song originally that we played for a few months. During one of our meetings, the guys brought up that they didn’t really like the lyrics of that initial song so we spent some time trying to figure out if we should scrap it or try to rewrite it. We decided to rewrite it, but nothing really came of it. I had written ‘555’ a few weeks before and decided to show it to the guys to see if they would like it instead. They loved it, and thus, ‘555’ was born.

What does this song mean to you personally?

Chelsea: The title ‘555’ to me means change. I see 5s whenever big changes are about to take place. At that moment in my life, a big change needed to happen. I needed to wake up and realize that I had idealized my entire previous relationship, I had to grieve the loss of someone that never existed. Once I was able to do that, I was able to be with my boyfriend. This song is about healing myself for the people I love.

If listeners could take something away from this song, what would you like it to be?

Chelsea: I hope this song can help the listeners heal from previous relationships. If they’re going through a breakup, I hope it can help them to realize their worth and how important it is to love yourself before attempting to love anyone else.

This song is from your upcoming album Quantum Entanglement, which is due to be released on September 9th. What are some of the things we can look forward to hearing on the album?

Chelsea: I’m very excited for our album, “Quantum Entanglement.” This album is a piece of my soul and each of the eleven songs comes together to tell one big story. “If U Knew Me” is my favourite song on the album. The recording process was crazy. Jon screamed into his guitar pickups and wrote an epic solo.

What advice would you offer to someone who is looking to pursue a career in the music industry?

Chelsea: Be authentic. Don’t create to gain approval from anyone else. Don’t follow trends. Don’t write what you think people want to hear. Just begin writing and let the words flow. There is no right or wrong way to write a song. Find your way and roll with it. People don’t know what they want to hear until they hear it and odds are, if you’re staying true to yourself and using music to express your inner essence, people will love it.

Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?

Chelsea: My favourite thing to think about is the fact that no one knows what’s going on. We’re just born and then wake up one day into this world. Even the most successful people have no idea what’s happening. I think we can all find comfort in that. Stay true to yourself and never give up on your dreams. You will be successful no matter what if you follow your heart’s desires.
