Interview: Ben Selleck Discusses The Release Of His Upcoming Debut Single “Different Sides”!

Essex-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ben Selleck possesses a naturally influencing musical creativity & soulful vocal harmony that looks set to transpire a prominent impact within the music scene.

Ben has been a music teacher since 2009, a job that he is incredibly proud of and enthusiastic about however, his goal is to build a solo career and release timeless music that will hopefully take him musical venture on the road.

His debut single ‘Different Sides’ was recorded remotely, with Ben on Keys and lead vocals, and accompanied by a supreme cast of other musicians: Ben Rudge on drums, Amy Hamilton on backing vocals and guitars by Adam Wright (who also mixed and mastered the single).

Ben has kindly taken the time to speak to Fierce & Fabulous Revolution about his forthcoming debut single, along with getting to know more from the artist behind the music. Check out what he said below.

Hey Ben, thank you for this interview. Can you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourself?

Ben: I’m a songwriter & session player from Essex. I’ve been playing keyboards and touring all over the country for various bands for the last couple of years and am now embarking on a solo career, releasing a song in the UK Country genre.

When did you first discover your passion for music?

Ben: I think watching my favourite bands and artists on TOTP as a kid. It gives away my age, but I still remember those events so clearly and really feel that was the key that opened the door for me to teach myself piano, guitar and sing.

Have you always known that you wanted to pursue a career within the music industry?

Ben: Absolutely, I’ve always been in bands since 15 and being a music teacher means there’s literally not a day that goes by where I’m not living and breathing music.

How would you describe your musical style to someone unfamiliar with your music?

Ben: I’m always trying to make my music feel timeless as opposed to chasing the latest sounds or beats. So my music is made using real instruments and classic hooky melodies. It’s essentially a melting pot with elements of Country, Pop, Soul and Rock.

You are about to release the debut single “Different Sides” shortly. How did the idea for this single come together?

Ben: I heard the phrase used in conversation and tried to build a story of a couple, whose personalities are polar opposite, but still feel very much in love. It’s not necessarily about anyone I know, but still something I think we can all relate to, especially after being cooped up in lockdown with our partners for the last year.

Did you always plan to release “Different Sides” as a single?

Ben: Not really, this whole solo career has been a happy side effect from lockdown and being unable to tour as a musician. As the pieces of the song came together it brought me a new focus and goal to try and get these songs of mine out and heard.

What does this song personally mean to you?

Ben: It was the first one in this group of songs that felt like it had a radio-friendly feel to it. It’s special to me because it totally rekindled my passion for writing music which I’ve not done much of in the last decade.

How did your family & friends react to your forthcoming release?

Ben: Apart from my Fiancé asking if it was about her, they have all been so supportive as they have throughout my whole touring career with other bands.

If listeners could take something away from this song, what would you like it to be?

Ben: That it’s good to have your own quirky side to a relationship and if you’re both happy then don’t worry what others think.

What are some of the things you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Ben: I have two young daughters that keep me on my toes and we’re currently renovating- spare time seems a few years off right now, but we all enjoy family walks through our local woods and along the seafront.

If you could perform a duet with anyone in the world, who would you choose & why?

Ben: Well, there’s obvious superstars like Elton John and Stevie Wonder, but I’d love to play a gig with Brothers Osborne or Kip Moore those guys are so talented. There’s lots of amazing UK Country talent too, I’d love to duet with lots of them.

What three words best describe you?

Ben: Kind, Laid-back, Quiet.

What was the last TV series you binge-watched & did you enjoy it?

Ben: Probably the Nightstalker documentary on Netflix- I wouldn’t say I enjoyed it as it caused some sleepless nights. One bonus was that the scenery of LA did inspire a new song which will be released later in the year.

If you could possess one superpower, what would you choose & why?

Ben: To be able to fly would be amazing. Would make day trips so much more interesting and traffic jams a thing of the past.

Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?

Ben: Thanks a million for giving me the platform to share and talk about my music, come and say hello on my socials.
