Canadian singer-songwriter Allanah Jeffreys has recently released the single “Fake Life” & has kindly taken the time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution about her latest release, along with getting to know more about the artist behind the music.
Hey Allanah, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Can you start by telling us a little bit about yourself?
Allanah: “Thank you for asking me! My name is Allanah Jeffreys and I’m a singer/songwriter from Winnipeg Canada.“
When did you first discover your passion for music?
Allanah: “I’ve been singing since I was 6 years old but have loved music for as long as I can remember. When I was little I used to sing and dance around to Shania Twain in my basement and I just loved the way the music made me feel. Music has always made me feel so happy and free, and it’s been a way that I can express myself. Ever since I was little, I would write poetry and try to write songs, but I was too afraid to share it. The past few years I’ve been working really hard at my writing and have grown the confidence to show it off. Music has helped me through a lot, and I hope to help others through my music as well.“
What was the first song you can recall performing in front of an audience & do you still perform it now?
Allanah: “As funny as it is, the first song that I ever performed in front of an audience was The Grouch Song from Sesame Street. I haven’t performed this song since, and I don’t plan on it. haha“
Have you always known that music was a career that you wanted to pursue?
Allanah: “Music has always been in my life. I come from a musical family with my Mom and Dad both being singers, and the rest of my family for the most part. I felt very inspired at a young age, but it wasn’t till I was around 11 years old when I started taking my singing more seriously, and I knew it was what I wanted to do as a career.“
You recently released the brand new single “Fake Life”, how did the idea to create this single come together?
Allanah: “I got the idea to write Fake Life by being a social media user myself. Social media can be a great thing, but it also has a dark side to it that many people are lost in. There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes in the digital world, and it’s almost like some of us our living these fake lives and it’s hard to know what is real and what is not.“
What would you consider to be the main inspiration behind this song?
Allanah: “I wrote this song about social media and how it can be deceiving, and unrealistic.“
“Fake life is a song about a girl who is pretending to be someone’s she’s not on social media with the hopes of getting more likes, and to please other people. She feels trapped and is unhappy, but she suffers in silence and is too afraid to speak out about her problems.“
How did you family & friends react to your recent release?
Allanah: “My family has always been very supportive of my music and that’s something that I am very lucky to have. My brother is a super guitar player. We enjoy playing music together and this song is no different. My grandma always updates me daily about how my songs are doing and is always so excited to see the streams going up. My parents are both very supportive. My mom is always sharing my posts and music and my Dad has always been a big help with making sure everything is working and does a lot of the behind the scenes work.”
What does the song personally mean to you?
Allanah: “Social media has become a huge part of my life. Without it, it would be so much harder to share my music and my music journey with everyone. Social media has helped me in many ways, it can be stressful at times, and exhausting. It’s easy to get caught up in your own head and to be constantly worrying about other people’s opinions. Everyone wants to be good enough, and it’s an internal struggle that we all face. I always try to stay truthful with my followers as it’s something that is very important to me. I try to send positive messages out to people cause we all need that sometimes.”
If listeners could take away one thing from this song, what would you like it to be?
Allanah: “I want my listeners to know that it’s okay to not be perfect, so just be yourself, care less about what others think, and make the most out of the life you have. Your happiness is the most important thing in the world, and it shouldn’t be defined by what others want from you. As long as you are enjoying what you are doing, nobody can tell you that you are not successful.”
What are some of the things you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Allanah: “In my spare time I like to go for bike rides, play sports, write and play songs, and to blast music through my headphones and dance around like a moron in front of my mirror. I also find myself watching way too many videos on YouTube, but I try my best to keep that to a minimum.”
How would your family & friends describe you only using three words?
Allanah: “Happy, hardworking, and determined.”
What was the last TV series you binge-watched & did you enjoy it?
Allanah: “I’m not someone who typically watches TV shows but the last one that I binge-watched was Stranger Things. I watched all the seasons again in a short amount of time, and it is definitely my favourite show at the moment.”
What are some of the songs you always keep on your playlist & why?
Allanah: “When I listen to music, I find myself reaching to positive/upbeat songs more than anything. My favourite artist at the moment is Harry Styles and few of my favourite tracks include; Kiwi, Lights up, and Canyon Moon. I also play Break My Heart by Dua Lipa on repeat because it’s a bop.”
If you could duet with anyone on the planet, who would you choose?
Allanah: “There are so many artists that inspire me but if I had to pick one, I would have to say Harry Styles. There’s something that’s so different about his music, and he seems like the most chill and kind person ever.”
What is the best piece of advice someone has shared with you about pursuing a career in the music industry?
Allanah: “People are always going to try and change who you are, tell you that you aren’t good enough, and you are going to get way more noes then yeses. But no matter what happens, always stand up for what you believe in, stay true to yourself, and never give up.“
Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
Allanah: “I just wanted to say thank you for all the support and if you haven’t heard my music yet, you can find it on all streaming platforms under Allanah Jeffreys! You can also find me on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. Don’t be shy, I am always here for you, and I hope I can spread positivity and bring light to your life in some shape or form.
