Upcoming country singer-songwriter Reya-Jayne has released her brand new single titled “How Good You Are” & has kindly spoken to Fierce & Fabulous Revolution about her latest song.
Hi Reya Jayne, thank you for this interview. Can you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourself?
Reya-Jayne: Hi Jess! Thank you so much for having me! I would say the easiest way to sum me up in one line would be ‘an English rose with a Nashville sound.’ I’m a northern lass born and raised and started writing when I was about 13 years old, and somewhere along the way that developed into country music!
When did you first discover your passion for music?
Reya-Jayne: I had always been on the stage and actually started out in musical theatre! Music was always a big part of my life but I didn’t decide to buy a guitar and start creating my own music until I first discovered Taylor Swift – and I’m sure I’m not the only one who can say that! It just grew from there really, the further I went down the rabbit hole of country artists, the more I wanted to write and perform it.
How would you describe your musical style to someone unfamiliar with your music?
Reya-Jayne: I think its definitely modern country-pop, and hopefully fun to listen to! I try to make my lyrics as authentic and real as possible and I really want them to be up there with the traditional country we all know and love.
You are about to release your brand new single “How Good You Are” on May 29th. How did the inspiration to create this song come together?
Reya-Jayne: This song actually came from a total lack of inspiration.. I had really bad writers block for a good few weeks and decided that I was just going to write anything happy that could come to my mind. Then came this storyline about meeting someone that was just too good to be true and the rest of the song just sort of fell into place!
How would you compare the creative process behind this song, compared to your debut single “Homeless”?
Reya-Jayne: The main big difference between the two is that ‘Homeless’ was very much written from personal experience and about what I was going through at the time I wrote it, where as ‘How Good You Are’ is pretty much fictional – maybe even fantasy! It’s a modern day fairytale of a chance meeting between two people that can’t believe their luck, and sadly my love life might be a little more tragedy than fairy tale…
What does the song personally mean to you?
Reya-Jayne: This song will always be so special to me because it was the first song I ever recorded in the studio. I think it was a major turning point for me where I thought, okay yeah, maybe I can do this! It’s the first time I have heard something I have written become a ‘real’ song and I’ll always remember that!
If listeners could take away one thing from this song, what would you like it to be?
Reya-Jayne: I think something I realised after I had listened to it back a few times is that ‘How Good You Are’ can really be understood in two ways, the first being that you can’t believe how perfect the person you are with is, but also to realise how good you are yourself and that no-one is too good for you! We all deserve the love that we receive and more and I think that has become an important undertone to it, even if it was accidental!
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Reya-Jayne: With nothing but spare time, at the moment I’m doing a lot of Joe Wicks and YouTube work outs in between writing and doing uni assignments! There’s also been a lot of Disney + going on.
What was the last song you listened to & did you enjoy it?
Reya-Jayne: The last song I listened to was Lori McKenna’s ‘When You’re My Age’ which is BEAUTIFUL. If you ever want a good cry or are missing your mum, I highly recommend Lori’s music. She is a massive influence of mine!
What song do you always keep on your playlist & why?
Reya-Jayne: Lauren Alaina – Ladies in the 90’s. It’s just SO MUCH FUN!
If you could perform a duet with anyone in the world, who would you choose?
Reya-Jayne: Taylor Swift, if I could get through it without crying! I got the chance to sing ‘You Belong With Me’ with Liz Rose last year in Nashville and I was a blubbering mess!
What would you class as your favourite movie & why?
Reya-Jayne: It’s definitely a guilty pleasure but ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ is my favourite pick me up movie! I watched it twice in one day once and I have no regrets…
How would your friends describe you in three words?
Reya-Jayne: Bubbly, passionate and enthusiastic!
If you could have any superpower, what would you choose & why?
Reya-Jayne: To read minds, gets rid of the guess work and would probably make for some interesting songspo!
Finally, is there anything you want to say to the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
Reya-Jayne: Just to make sure you listen to ‘How Good You Are’ on May 29th and let me know what you think! And if you like what you hear make sure to give me a follow on Spotify and my socials to keep in the loop for what’s coming next! @reyajaynemusic
