Country sister duo Kayla & Kelli aka Wild Fire have recently released their brand new EP ‘Been There’ & I have had the privilege of interviewing these two talented artists!
In this interview, We discuss this talented duo’s latest release, along with getting to know the artists behind the music.
Hey Kayla & Kelli, thank you so much for agreeing to this interview. Can you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourselves?
Hey, thanks for interviewing us Jess! We are Kayla Iutzwig (16) and Kelli Iutzwig (14) from Houston Texas. We are sisters, best friends and founders of the Pop
Country duo Wild Fire.
When did you first discover your passion for music & realize that it was something that you wanted to pursue?
We began singing at ages five and six, doing musical theater and dance. We also began taking professional vocal lessons and still do so to this day. We quickly realized we had a huge passion for the arts and began trying out for as many plays as we could. We always seemed to land the singing parts which we thoroughly enjoyed.
How did the idea for you two to start Wild Fire come together?
After doing musical theater for many years, we decided to enter a local singing competition put on by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo called “Rodeo Rockstar”. We ended up making it to the semi finals that year (2016). We were also interviewed by our local Fox 26 news channel and sang some songs for the television audience. We realized after that experience that we wanted to pursue music together and form a duo. We did so right away in 2016 and wasted no time. We began recording original songs, performing out and building our brand.
You recently released your brand new EP ‘Been There’, which was absolutely amazing by the way! How did the idea for this EP come together?
That’s a great question, one that has not been asked before. Over the course of a year we wrote a very large number of songs with many different co-writers in Nashville, Los Angeles and Houston. When it came time to select the songs, the ones that were our favorites all had a theme behind them. It was the idea of experiences we had gone through or observed, things that were in our past and that we had learned from. We felt like we wanted to share these experiences with others to help them get through similar circumstances in their lives. When writing lyrics we are always very careful to ensure that the meaning behind them applies to multiple situations and all walks of life. We want to help people through our music and that is exactly what we intended with this EP.
What songs from the EP mean the most to both of you?
“Hold On To That” definitely speaks to both of us in a huge way. Although we are young, we realize that in this life you must treasure every moment and not take anything for granted. We should all spend quality time with the ones we love, treasure the things we hold dear, and not be in such a hurry or those moments will pass us by.
Another song that is very significant to us is “Flaunt.” The idea behind this song is that you should never let anyone take advantage of you in any situation. You should always have enough self-respect to stand your ground, even if it means losing out on something seemingly important.
How have your family & friends reacted to your latest release? good reviews I hope!
We have had an overwhelmingly positive response to the EP. Our family and friends have been extremely supportive and encouraging throughout the years, even more so with this release.
This is the part where I like to get to know the artists behind the music. What do you like to get up to in your spare time? Any hobbies?
Kayla: I absolutely love working out every day. I actually cannot miss a day at the gym or it saddens me. I also strive to eat healthy and take care of myself. These are things that are extremely important to me.
Kelli: Like Kayla, I love to work out every day and eat healthy. We also both run almost every day. I also enjoy school sports and play as many of them as I can. My favorite sport is basketball.
What was the first single that you ever brought?
The first single that we released in 2016 was a song called “Believe.” It is a song of hope and encouragement that is meant to uplift others. You can only find this song on our website now. We have removed it from distribution because we shifted the sound of our music in the direction of pop-country.
What one item could you not live without & why?
Kayla: My guitar.
Kelli: Chapstick. I severe chapstick addiction. 🙂
What is one song you always keep on playlist & why?
Kayla: Tame Impala “The Less I Know the Better”. This song instantly makes you happy. It is a great feels song!
Kelli: John Mayer “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room”. This song is the absolute best song of all time.
Who are the people that most inspire you throughout your music?
Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris and Taylor Swift.
What can we expect from Wild Fire in the near future?
We have lots of exciting things planned. Before the new EP was even released we began writing new songs. We plan to record some new songs this summer in LA. We are also working very hard to perform at larger events such as festivals and fairs. In fact you can catch us at the East Texas Country Music Festival in Grapland, Texas on July 4th: https://etcmf.com/2019-lineup In addition, we are looking to perform outside of Texas more often. We really want to get our name out there and this is a really good way to achieve that.
Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
We hope that all of you can find something you’re passionate about and feel very inspired about. When you do find that special something, pursue it with all of your being and never look back. We love you all and thank you for your support!
