I am very lucky to bring you an interview with Hannah, where we talk about her upcoming album, her future tour, and what this talented lady likes to get up to when she is not performing. Enjoy!
Hey Hannah, thank you so much for this interview. Could you start off by telling me a bit about yourself?
Hey – thanks for having me! I’m an independent singer-songwriter, based in Leeds. I started out busking in my hometown before uploading videos to YouTube. I love writing pop songs and playing guitar – poetry was my first love in school so I think that’s how I got into songwriting in the first place.
When did you first realise that music was the career that you wanted to pursue?
I sort of fell into music, I just loved playing guitar and songwriting, but I never studied it. I’ve got a Biology BSc degree from the University Of Leeds, and I was busking a lot on my weekends and even managed to fit in a few tours between exams/studying, so by the way I graduated I was ready and able to focus on music full-time.
A massive congratulations on your debut album “RED”. Could you tell us the story of how this incredible album came to life?
Thank you! RED has been years in the making, I just never knew it. I decided to make an album last year. I was worried, with the way that the industry is going (leaning towards singles) that I had so many songs that I’d written that I didn’t want to leave on the shelf, never to be heard, so I decided to release the best ones in the form of my debut album. We recorded over quite a few months at Song Mason Studios in Leeds before taking the project into Greenmount Studios in Leeds to be mixed. I’d worked with my producer and mixing engineer on tracks before but never something of this size. We really made sure every detail of the album is the best that it can be, I’m so proud of the way it turned out.
What are some of the influences behind the creation of “RED”?
My guitarist Will Dewsbury is a big influence, he chooses some really interesting tones and conveys a lot of emotion through his playing. I also love Phil Collins, Hayley Kiyoko, Tegan & Sara, and Damien Rice… a real mixture.
What are some of your favourite songs from the album?
“Taboo” is probably in my top 3, it’s an upbeat poppy tune with a killer synth in the chorus. The production is just dirty sounding haha. I love it. Then there are the more stripped, emotional tunes like “Miss You” and “Without You” that I have real sentimental attachments to. “Play It Again” is my current favourite because it’s so summery, it fits this weather perfectly.
How do you feel that your music style has developed in the journey to “RED”?
I think I’ve tried a few different things over the years – mainly trying to be either emotional and acoustic OR poppy and electro, and being so strict with my genre just doesn’t work for me. I feel dissatisfied if I only let myself do one of those things, so RED is a real mixture of genres and sounds, but somehow it works! I would describe the record as a rollercoaster of acoustic-driven pop.
You have a number of tour dates coming up in the next few months. What are some of the things that you are most looking forward to about your tour?
I love performing live so that’s gonna be great, but it’s amazing to meet people after the gigs too. Especially those who I’ve talked to online but never met properly (or only see once in a while!) when most of what I do is online, touring makes it all feel real.
When you are not performing. What sort of things do you like to get up to in your spare time?
I’m addicted to chocolate… so lots of that haha. Hanging out with my cats, hiking, spending time with friends and family. Netflix!!
Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
Yes! That’s for taking the time to read this and get to know me a bit, would love it if you could spare a few mins to listen to my new single ‘Taboo’ and let me know what you think! Always good to get opinions from people who are new to my music 🙂
