REVIEW: Katy Hurt Discusses The Inspiring Single “Oh Girl”!

Born in London & raised in the US, Katy Hurt was drawn to the sounds of Country, Americana & Southern rock from a young age, inspired by artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, The Eagles, and Patsy Cline.

Since her debut in 2016, Katy has released a string of critically acclaimed singles and EPs, showcasing her versatile range & has won accolades such as the UK Country Music Spotlight Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year, Best EP, Best Song & Best Video.

Katy continues to make waves through her distinctive lyrical storytelling through her latest single “Oh Girl”, which serves as a timely reminder that we all suffer from struggles & insecurities, & that it’s okay to share those feelings with the people closest to you.

Katy has kindly taken the time to chat with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding the release of her latest single & what it means to the artist herself.

Hey Katy, thank you for this interview. Can you introduce yourself to readers who might be unfamiliar with your music?

Katy: Of course, hey everyone I’m Katy. I’m a Country/Americana singer, who grew up in the states and is now based in the UK. I’m short, loud and a whole lot clumsy. Nice to meet you!

For those wanting to know more about my music background, you can check out my website or socials.

When did you first discover your passion for music?

Katy: I started singing and performing when I was really little and started writing songs soon after. I’ve been putting out music since I was 13, so it really has been my whole life! My parents were big music fans and it was always around me growing up, I remember going to see Rascal Flatts play in North Carolina, with Sara Evans as support and I knew at that show that all I ever wanted was to be up on stage.

How would you currently describe your musical style?

Katy: Currently, I think it probably sits on the border of Country and Americana. It’s a little twang and a little rock. I’ve always had pretty wide inspirations though so it is something I’ve found hard to define.

You recently released the new single “Oh Girl”. How did the idea for this song come together?

Katy: The idea started after seeing a close friend of mine who was really struggling. I’ve been through highs and lows myself so I know what its like and I wanted this song to serve as a reminder that its okay to let people in and let go of the pain that you hold on to.

It was co-written with Murray Pulver, Rhianna Rae Saj and Gab Zsapka and we actually finished it the day before we went into the studio to work on my album.

Did you always plan to release “Oh Girl” as a single?

Katy: Originally no, but as time has passed I realised that it was an important message that needed to have its own moment and it felt like the right time!

This song serves as a reminder that we all have struggles & insecurities & that it’s okay to share those thoughts with people around us. What does it mean to you to share a song centring around such an important subject with the world & what do you hope for listeners to take from it?

Katy: I’ve always believed that music is important because it connects people. Growing up, I often felt like an outsider but I found comfort in songs and stories. They could make me feel brave, strong, make me cry, the list goes on. So I’ve always put a little piece of myself into every song I write and I hope that somewhere out there someone listens and feels like it’s their story too. I truly hope that listeners hear Oh Girl and realise they are not alone, that it’s okay to put down the weight they’ve been carrying.

What does this personally mean to you?

Katy: It means a lot, in fact, I should probably take my own advice more (but I’ve never been good at that).

This song is set to feature on your future album. What are some of the things you can currently tell us about this album itself?

Katy: I’ve put quite a few singles out so far, and I can tell you there is still a lot more to come. I think that this album really covers all the different aspects of what I’m capable of as an artist and I hope that people get to know be better as they listen. There are some really fun moments for rocking out and some good old sad songs about life, love and everything in between.

What advice would you offer to someone who is looking to pursue a career within the music industry?

Katy: Take a big breath and expect for plans to fall apart. I think something I’m still coming to terms with myself is how unpredictable this industry is, you need a really good plan but you also need to be resilient when it doesn’t work out. Also… everyone you meet will have their own opinions about what you should or could be doing, and it’s okay not to listen!

Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?

Katy: Absolutely, thank you for taking the time to listen! I hope you are doing good and I hope I get to see you at a show someday.
