April has kindly taken the time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding the journey behind “Krysalis” & you can find the full interview below.
Hey April, thank you so much for this interview. Can you start by telling readers a little bit about yourself?
April: Of course! I am originally from Connecticut, but I’ve been in Nashville now for about 11 years. I started singing with my dad in church when I was very young and fell in love with the music there.
When did you first discover your passion for music?
April: I realized I had a passion for music probably around 10 or 11 years old. I found myself writing and singing whenever I had free time. I started my own band at that age as well!
Have you always known that you wanted to pursue a career within the music industry?
April: I always knew. I felt very blessed in the sense that I never doubted the calling in my life.
How would you currently describe your musical style?
April: It’s very soulful and inspirational. With hints of pop, country, and r&b influences!
Not long ago, you released the brand new album “Krysalis”, which sounds amazing. How did the idea for this album come together?
April: Thank you very much! Well, I actually started writing it years ago when I was in a transitional period of my life. I had just gotten married and out of a four-year record deal. So it was like a blank page. But I went through a lot of growth between then and now, of course and I knew I wanted the album to be about the growing stages of life. “Krysalis” felt like the perfect title, as it represents the growing stage of a butterfly.
What are some of the things that inspired the creative process behind the songs featured on this album?
April: With some of the songs, I took inspiration from people in my life and what they were going through at the time- Bullets In The Dark and Scratch The Surface both came from that. And a lot of the others were simply just me looking in the mirror and being honest with myself. Writing what I needed to hear at the time. Watered Down and Crowd Pleaser are examples of that.
This is your latest album/EP release since “Sink or Swim” in 2018. What inspired you to release this album now?
April: Well honestly, I wanted to release it over two years ago, but God had other plans. The pandemic happened and I got pregnant with my first son! So a lot of delays. But I truly believe it came out at the exact perfect time. My son being born felt like the perfect ending to this chapter of music.
How would you describe your creative journey musically & personally from your last EP & “Krysalis”?
April: With my last EP, I didn’t have as much creative control, and although I love all the songs on Sink Or Swim, the EP felt rushed and thrown together. With Krysalis, I knew exactly what I wanted and I executed it. And I took my time to make sure it was exactly what I wanted to say and how I wanted it to sound.
What are some of your favourite songs to feature on this album?
April: Oh man, I truly love every song for different reasons, but I’d say my favourite to perform live is Take The Edge Off and my favourite song personality is Seven Or Seventeen because it’s a love letter to my son.
What does this album personally mean to you?
April: I learned a lot about myself while writing and recording this album. I learned that I’m resilient and stronger than I thought. Releasing this album was almost like having a baby to me, honestly! I know that sounds a little strange, but I’ve been working on it for years and now that it’s finally out I feel a weight lifted off my shoulders and I’m just so incredibly proud of it!
If listeners could take anything away from this album, what would you like it to be?
April: Inspiration. I hope it can lift you out of a dark place. Most of my songs have a positive message attached to them on purpose. My goal is to be a light, and this album is no different.
Are there any songs that did not make the final track list for this album that we could see released at a later date?
April: Definitely. There are a few.
What advice would you offer to someone who was looking to pursue a career within the music industry?
April: Write songs you want to hear. Be kind to people. Accept all the opportunities at the beginning. Build your circle of cheerleaders and be a cheerleader for others. Be unapologetically you.
Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
April: Go stream my album, Krysalis!! 🙂
