Emerging Manchester-based singer-songwriter Jotsey has caught the attention of fans & critics through his charismatically unique musical style & soulfully captivating vocal harmonies.
Not long ago, Jotsey unveiled the brand new single “Violent” & has kindly taken the time to chat with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution about his latest composition, along with getting to learn more from the artist himself. Check out what he had to say below.
Hey Jotsey, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Can you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourself?
Jotsey: Hey Jess, thanks for having me for this interview. Of course! My artist name is Jotsey, I’m 24 & I’m currently living in Manchester UK making music.
When did you first discover your passion for music?
Jotsey: I first discovered my passion for music when I was about 5 years old. I remember my dad brought home a small acoustic guitar for me & I was instantly glued to it even though I had no idea what I was doing. I just remember loving it so much.
How would you describe your musical style to someone unfamiliar with your music?
Jotsey: For anyone unfamiliar with my music, I’d describe it as chilled alternative pop music. I listen to a lot of R&B artists like The Weeknd & Frank Ocean but I also listen to chilled artists like Bon Iver & EDEN so I try & merge them two genres together with my music.
You recently released the single “Violent”. How did the idea for this song come together?
Jotsey: The idea for the song came about when I was just writing songs in my room, that’s how pretty much all of my songs start to be honest. I made the instrumental of the song, put a basic beat over it & then wrote whatever lyrics came to mind at the time & after some time ended up with the song we have today.
Did you always plan to release “Violent” as a single?
Jotsey: Yeah of course, very early on when I came up with the melody for the chorus I thought that it would work really well as a single. I believe it’s one of the strongest songs I’ve written so far & couldn’t wait to show it to people.
What does this song personally mean to you?
Jotsey: The song to me personally it’s about admitting that someone is emotionally hurting you in a relationship & through admitting that you can start to move past the relationship & rebuild yourself emotionally.
What message would you like listeners to take away from this song?
Jotsey: If anyone listens to the song & relates to it I’d like them to know that they’re not alone in that situation & that they can be super strong & move past a relationship that isn’t right for them.
What are some of the things you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Jotsey: Honestly I’m so boring, if I’m not making music or doing some kind of promotion stuff I’m binge-watching The US Office! I’ve recently taken up going to the gym with one of my friends though so we’ll see if that goes well… haha
If you could perform a duet with anyone, who would you choose & why?
Jotsey: Phoebe Bridgers! I absolutely love her voice & would love to have a sing along with her.
What advice would you offer to someone looking to pursue a career within the music industry?
Jotsey: Make sure you have thick skin because there will be a lot criticism & people that generally just don’t vibe with your music but keep staying true to yourself & keep enjoying what you do. Music & art is very subjective & for every person that doesn’t click with you there will be 3 more that do & that feeling is really special.
Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
Jotsey: Keep reading & supporting the site! I’ve found so many great artists through it & I’m honoured to be a part of it now! Thank you so much. 🙂
