Rising music star Bailey Coats has recently released the heartfelt-pop number “No Other Way” & has kindly taken the time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution about her latest single, along with getting to know more from the artist behind the music.
Hey Bailey, thank you so much for agreeing to this interview. Can you begin by telling the readers a little bit about yourself?
Bailey: My name is Bailey Coats and I am a pop recording artist from Birmingham, AL. I create music based upon my personal life experiences as well as the experiences of others.
When did you first discover your passion for music?
Bailey: My parents told me that at the age of 3 that I had memorized all the lyrics to Faith Hill’s song “Breathe” and that moment was just the beginning. My passion for music has always been instilled in me. It is a part of my soul and my purpose.
How would you describe your musical style to someone unfamiliar with your music?
Bailey: Imagine if Lizzo, Britney, and Taylor had a baby- that’s me! But in all seriousness, my music is fun, fresh pop music. My songs reflect a wide variety of emotions and discuss numerous topics, but all relate to one another by having a common theme of discussing authentic, real experiences that myself and so many others have lived through.
A few months ago, you released a video describing your experience as a teenager receiving some very tough criticism about your vocals, which ended up going viral. How do you feel seeing your video reaching thousands of people & helping to inspire fellow artists who have received similar negativity?
Bailey: It is truly so humbling to know that this mortifying experience I had as a 13 year old is now being used to empower other artists and individuals everywhere to keep pursuing their passions amidst adversity. The fact that such a negative moment now has a positive message behind it means more to me than I can even begin to express. If we continually turn negativity into positivity, nothing and no one can stop any one from achieving their goals and aspirations.
How do you believe the critique given to you at the time affected you on a personal level?
Bailey: Adolescent experiences are some of our most defining moments in our lives. And that moment could have easily been my breaking point where I simply decided to walk away. I am so grateful that this experience happened because by receiving that criticism and using it as motivation, I can now say with complete confidence that that was the moment where I decided that nothing and no one was going to stop me from achieving my purpose.
What advice would you offer to someone who may be facing a similar situation?
Bailey: Know your worth. Everyone will have an opinion about what you do, but as long as you stay true to yourself and remain confident in your decisions that is all that matters at the end of the day.
If you could say anything to those who criticised you back then now, what would you say?
Bailey: Thank you. No matter what type of criticism you receive in life, always take it and turn it into something positive. Your worth is never defined by another person’s words or perspective. And thanks to that judge, I learned that lesson early on in life and in my career.
You are about to release your brand new single “No Other Way” on June 19th. How did the idea to create this song first come together?
Bailey: ‘No Other Way’ was written in 2018. At this time, I was falling in love for the first time and had the opportunity to express this newfound emotion in a fun, whimsical way with the help of my co-writer and producer, Traci Hale and Wirlie Morris.
What is the main inspiration behind the lyrics of the song?
Bailey: ‘No Other Way’ describes the process and the aftermath of falling in love. We wanted to capture the innocence and invincibility that couples experience during this ‘honeymoon’ stage of a relationship.
What does the song personally mean to you?
Bailey: This song was one of the first records I recorded with my producer, Wirlie Morris. ‘No Other Way’ was one of the first songs that fully reflected the artist that I am. Rather than being categorized/ stigmatized by someone else, creating ‘No Other Way’ with both Wirlie and Traci allowed me to experience creative freedom that I had never been granted before.
If listeners could take away one message from this song, what would you like it to be?
Bailey: Love fearlessly. In life we take many risks and love is one of them. Be fearless and live your life to the fullest by sharing it with people and with a person who will love you fiercely in return.
What are some of the things you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Bailey: My family means everything to me. Any time I can spend with them is so precious and treasured. I also have discovered a newfound passion for working out and I absolutely love baking. I burn water and cannot cook to save my life, but I can bake a mean cupcake!
What is one song you always keep on your playlist & why?
Bailey: One song I am currently obsessed with is Lizzo’s ‘Like A Girl.’ This song is all about female empowerment and the beat is so contagious you can’t help but vibe to it!
If you could duet with anyone on the planet, who would you choose & why?
Bailey: That is truly an excellent question! I really do not know- there are so many incredible artists! A collab is so contingent upon the meshing of styles, genres, etc. and who I would like to duet with would ultimately depend upon the nature of the track and the chemistry between myself and another artist.
Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
Bailey: Thank you so much for taking the time to read this article, first off! And I hope that you will continue to persevere through whatever obstacle you are or will face- know you’ve got one supporter right here!
