Viral pop sensation Emily Vu has just released the official video for her brand new single “WEEKEND” & has kindly taken the time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution about her latest release.

Hey Emily, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Can you start by telling us a little bit about yourself?

Emily: My name is Emily Vu and I’m an 18 year old singer/songwriter currently living in Los Angeles. I love to sing, obviously, haha, and I enjoy hanging out with my friends at the beach!

When did you first discover your passion for music & knew that it was a career you wanted to pursue?

Emily: My parents put me into piano lessons when I was four and, to be honest, I absolutely hated it. I had always wanted to learn how to play the guitar but my parents didn’t let me pick that up until I was 10. I ended up quitting piano my freshman year of high school to focus on basketball, but ended up realizing I didn’t actually hate playing piano, I just hated being told HOW to play it. So, after a year-long break from music, I decided to jump back into it and found my love for music again. After my sophomore year of high school, I knew it was what I wanted to do with my life. I didn’t want to be stuck behind a desk all day doing a job I wasn’t born to do.

You have become very well known on the TikTok scene, how did the idea to start your TikTok account come together?

Emily: I started my TikTok around the summer of 2018. Honestly, I just wanted to post singing covers for fun and I was kind of embarrassed to post them on my Instagram where all of my friends could see. I just randomly started posting covers and started with no following whatsoever, but, eventually, more and more people started seeing them. My friends were clueless about my TikTok for months.

Did you ever believe that you would create such an influential impact through your music & TikTok?

Emily: Honestly, I didn’t. I was originally just posting videos for fun but later on I became a person people looked up to and I became a reason they started singing themselves. That feeling of being an inspiration to someone is amazing.

You are about to release your brand new single “Weekend”, what inspired you to create this single?

Emily: My producer friend SZNS and I were in a session and going through YouTube beats for inspiration and we came across a really pretty guitar beat and decided to recreate it. At the time I was going through a little heartbreak myself so writing the lyrics was fairly easy.

How would you compare the creative process behind this single to your previous releases?

Emily: I had the whole song planned in my head before we had even started writing. I knew exactly how I wanted “Weekend” to sound and SZNS really helped drive that. My previous songs have been pretty experimental because I hadn’t found my sound yet, but once I had finished “Weekend,” I knew this was the direction I wanted to go.

What does the song personally mean to you?

Emily: I wrote this after a heartbreak. I tend to write from experience and this was definitely one of those songs. I had been talking to someone for not that long, but long enough to catch feelings, and they ended up leaving. No goodbye, no warning, just gone by the weekend.

If listeners could take away one thing from this single, what would you like it to be?

Emily: The one message I’d like to get out to listeners is to be careful how much of yourself you put into another person because at any second they could leave.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Emily: When I’m not making music, I really just enjoy hanging out with my friends. I haven’t been able to do that as much because of me being so busy with work, so any free time I have I want to spend with friends. We usually go and get boba, hang out at someone’s house, or take a drive to the beach (my personal favorite).

If you could perform a duet with anyone in the world, who would you choose & why?

Emily: If I could perform a duet with anyone, it would probably be the multi-talented Chris Brown. He does everything and, in my opinion, is a very entertaining performer.

What is one song you always keep on your playlist?

Emily: A song that’s always on my playlist is “Still Think About You” by A Boogie Wit da Hoodie.

How would your friends describe you in three words?

Emily: I just asked my friends in a group chat right now what 3 words they’d use and they agreed on compassionate, dramatic, and dedicated.

What is the best piece of advice someone has offered you about pursuing a career in music?

Emily: The best piece of advice someone has given me is to work hard now, so I don’t have to later.

Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?

Emily: Go stream “WEEKEND” on all platforms on May 19th! And, more importantly, stay safe ya’ll!!
