Interviews

Interview: Taynee Lord & The Crookes “I love the storytelling aspect of Country music & do think all our lyrics tell their own individual stories”!

Not long ago, Country music sensations Taynee Lord & The Crookes released their brand new EP ‘If Only’ & I have had the chance to speak with them bout their most recent release!

1. Hi Taynee & The Crookes, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Can you start off by telling the readers about yourself?

Taynee: Hi, thank you for having us! We are a Country music band from Bristol, UK. We like to fuse contemporary Country with elements of Americana and Bluegrass. There are five members in the band;

Taynee Lord: Vocals and songwriter

Rich Crossley: Guitars and mandolin

Christian Spreadbury: Guitars and backing vocals

Josh Miller:  Drums and percussion

 Zach Bartlett: Bass and keys.

2. When did you first discover your passion for music?

Taynee:  Personally, I was singing before I could walk. From a young age, I loved performing and used to sit all my family down and perform shows to them singing Disney songs. I carried on performing throughout my schooling years and ended up studying musical theatre. I then began writing songs and teaching myself guitar…..I’ve never really looked back! I’ve been fortunate enough to perform in some pretty cool venues, I rarely get nervous, the bigger the audience the better – I  just love sharing my songs and stories.  Recently, Josh’s mum told me the best story of how she always knew he was talented! Apparently when Josh was a baby he used to bang on the pots and pans actually to a beat (staying in time). I think it’s amazing how his mum noticed his talents at such a young age and then was able to guide him in a musical direction.

3. Who had the idea to create Taynee Lord & The Crookes and how did it come together?

Taynee:  So, I had written a lot of songs over a couple of years and really wanted to have a band to work with to develop my songs and capture the perfect Country music sound. I had, until this point, been playing solo acoustic, but it wasn’t enough! I love performing in a group and rocking out, so forming a band of my own seemed like the next logical step. I put out some adverts, auditioned a lot of people, and finally found these guys! Rich (guitarist) already had the artist name Crookes (inspired by Crook’s Peak in the Mendips). Rich suggested using his artist name (Crookes) to name the band.

It’s crazy, ten months ago none of us knew each other, but we get on so well and musically it’s a perfect fit!

4. Congratulations on the release of your brand new EP ‘If Only’. Can you tell us what inspired you to create this new release?

Taynee: Thank you so much! I simply wanted my songs to be the best they could be……they are apart of me, so it was important that the debut release represented me and my songs accurately. I love the storytelling aspect of Country music and do think all our lyrics tell their own individual stories. The guys and I literally locked ourselves away for six months until we got it right!

We named the EP ‘If Only’ as future reminder to ourselves…….I don’t want to look back in years to come and say “If only I had done that”…….or “If only I had worked harder” etc…….It’s kinda about pursuing your dreams!

5. What are some of your personal favourite songs to feature on your latest EP?

Taynee: It’s so hard to choose when you are so involved. I think my personal favourite is either ‘Dress Code’ because of its upbeat nature. But, I also love ‘I Know’ as I’m attached to the story telling aspect in the lyrics. And I think it can be a relatable song to many.

Rich: My personal favourite is ‘I Know’. It has many layers and multiple instruments on the track. However, we still captured a sense of simplicity and space that allows the vocals and story to take centre stage – I am very proud of the arrangement and production of the track as a whole.

Taynee: It’s funny because all the band members have different favourites. Christian and Josh love ‘Like the Midnight’ and Zach likes ‘Dress Code’.

6. How have your family & friends reacted to your new EP? All positive I hope!

Taynee: Yes, definitely they all love it. We have had lots of great feedback. Lots of people are showing love for ”Like the Midnight. We are so happy for the amazing response!

7. Are there any songs that have not been included on this EP that we might be seeing in the future?

Taynee: We have a lot more to come and we are so excited! At our official EP Launch Party we did a taster of a song not on the EP called ‘Bet On You’ but you’ll have to wait for that one…

8. What do you like to get up to when you are not performing? Any hobbies?

Taynee: Is it sad to say all we do is love and obsess over music? I Absolutely love watching other Country artists perform and going to gigs and festivals. I personally love dancing, so anywhere there’s music, I’ll be there!

9. What song do you always keep on your playlist & why?

Taynee: I introduced the guys to Maren Morris’ music a little while ago so we all can’t stop listening to her at the moment. We love the track ‘The Feels’ from her new album which we cover at gigs. It’s got such a great groove and always puts us in the best mood. We can’t wait to go see her live when she performs in Bristol, got our tickets ready!!

10. What is your favourite movie & why?

Taynee: I’m so awful at making decisions, that’s where I got the inspiration for ‘Dress Code’ because I can never choose! I love movies about how musicians became famous and seeing their journey so loved the recent Bohemian Rhapsody movie about Queen. I’m very intrigued to watch Rocketman and learn more about Elton John’s ride to stardom.

11. What was the last TV show you binge watched & did you enjoy it?

Taynee: Game of thrones! It’s amazing, I love it. I normally can’t watch doctors programmes, documentaries with surgeries on bodies or anything real like that, it makes me feel ill. But when it’s blood and gore in fictional programmes or movies I’m fine! It’s the final episode tonight and I’m scared for the ending after all these years but have loved it!

12. What is one thing that you’ve been meaning to try but haven’t got round to yet?

Taynee: Sushi, I love fish but can’t bring myself to go into a sushi restaurant incase I don’t like it and then I’m stuck with a meal I can’t eat. I am slightly obsessed with food.

13. What is the best piece of advice that someone had given you about working within the music industry?

Taynee: There’s always going to be someone more talented than you, more experienced, but nobody is better than you. So always be equal and kind to everyone you meet.

14. Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?

Taynee: Thank you so much for reading our interview, we hope you listen and enjoy our new EP If Only.  And a big thank you Jess for having us and taking the time out to write all your amazing reviews. We are so grateful for your continued support!
