Cardiff-based cinematic electro-pop artist Freyja Elsy shares the brand single “Control”, which marks a new chapter from her forthcoming EP “to stop the world turning”.
Built around repetition, fragmented vocal processing and a stripped-back trip-hop pulse, ‘Control’ explores intrusive thoughts, emotional overwhelm and the fragile grip of trying to maintain stability as anxiety takes hold.
Speaking about the song, Freyja shared “‘Control’ is about deepset, ruminating anxiety. That feeling of desperation to try and maintain a sense of stability and command over a racing mind, heart and soul. The exhaustion of trying to maintain a mask of being ‘okay’ in your day to day life, all the while an anxiety gremlin runs riot in your head.
This song, full of heartache and fatigue, shuffling along with the trip hop beat and repeated lines (much like a ruminating mind), has been strangely therapeutic to create.
It’s hard to convey just in words how it feels to experience anxiety on this level of inner turmoil and how overcoming it is to your sense of self, but combining the music, sound design and lyrics in a swirling, claustrophobic, reiterative song has been the closest thing to being able to finally communicate it.”
Stripped back and deliberately tense, the track replaces the sweeping strings of “In My Veins” with a moodier, more claustrophobic sound, placing Elsy’s exposed vocal at the centre of its cyclical, fractured structure.
