Upcoming Canadian singer/songwriter Maddisun recently shared the official music video for “Amber”, which featured on the acclaimed album “The Pages”!
Written by Maddisun and Julian Bueckert (who also produced), “Amber” drop from this artist’s third album, “The Pages”, which arrived on digital streaming platforms in October after an initial physical release on vinyl, CD, and cassette.
Structured as a musical journal, “The Pages” carries an old soul vibe that seamlessly blends vintage folk, rock ‘n’ roll, Southern Rock and Americana influences across 12 tracks – all written by Maddisun with 10 produced by Julian Bueckert, and one each produced by Ian Docherty and Jim Bryson. Each song represents a page from Maddisun’s journal and is a direct reflection of Maddisun’s personal moments of love, loss, growth, connection, and self-discovery.
Maddisun has kindly taken the time to talk about the release of the official video for “Amber”, the reaction to her album, and her experience touring the UK & Ireland.
Hey Maddisun, thank you for this interview. Can you start by introducing yourself to readers who might be unfamiliar with your music?
Maddisun: Thanks so much for having me! My music is a blend of vintage classic rock/folk, and theatrical ballad singer/songwriter. I write about the mountain home I come from, and the feeling of growing up in a small town, but searching for something bigger, and now I write about all the places my music has taken me.
How would you currently describe your musical style?
Maddisun: It’s definitely rooted in classic/vintage rock and folk music. A little bit Stevie Nicks, little bit Jackson Browne. I like to write from what I know as well, which is country music. I grew up singing country songs around the campfire with my family, and I think that part of me never left. I also grew up on The Chicks and Shania Twain, but throw in some Green Day and Avril Lavigne in there, and you’ve got a sweet blend of folk/Canadiana/alt rock music.
You released the official video for the song “Amber”. How did the idea for the music video come together?
Maddisun: I wanted to capture the feeling of my “whirlwind” trips to Toronto. I spend a lot of time there, and it’s usually always filled with crazy fun adventures and musical escapades. I end up meeting a lot of cool people, and doing exciting things when I’m there, so this video sort of embodies that experience.
The mood of the song is definitely very ‘90s country/rock – a lot of people have been comparing it to the likes of Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morrisette (love this) – so it also has that like ‘90s vintage feel to it, kind of alt and expressive and theatrical/cool. Laura Lynn did a fantastic job blending the digital and super 8mm film footage to create something timeless and classic yet modern. The subway shots are probably my faves – when the train went by and I just went crazy and let GO!
How do you feel the video influences the core of the song?
Maddisun: The song feels very big and cinematic at times, but then also relaxed and cool/easygoing, like the verses and choruses have this cool contrast between the two. I think that was definitely captured in this video. The whole song has this warm and nostalgic vibe, along with the video!
Also, I have a bit of “synesthesia” when it comes to music, and this song has always been, as the title describes, “Amber” to me. It’s always been like a warm yellow amber tone, so we tried to capture that in the video. Also, the red coat was just iconic for this.
This song featured on your album “The Pages”, which was released a few months ago. How has the reaction from the release been & what does it mean to you?
Maddisun: It’s such a special privilege to get to do music for a living, and of course I work hard (and constantly) to reach new audiences, but I am forever grateful that I get to do this. So, when my music resonates with people, and I get messages or people coming up to me after shows saying they love this song or others, it really is so reaffirming that music is so needed in this world and that MY music is adding to people’s lives. It’s just amazing, especially with this song, which is about letting go and being the most true and authentic version of yourself, and radiating that genuine energy, whatever it might look like.
Also, I’ve sold hundreds of copies of the physical album, which is so cool because vinyl/cd/cassettes are the BEST!
Are there any further music videos or upcoming music releases you can share?
Maddisun: Yes! I just released a video for “The Pages” that I shot with my friend Olcan Mc Sparron (a great director/videographer) in Belfast!
I’ll also be releasing some live performance videos from tracks on the album and I wrote a new song just before I left on my tour called “Natural People” inspired by some parts of my life spent in Saskatchewan as a kid. The song is really funny and so is the story. That’ll be out sometime this year. I played it every night on the tour, and it was definitely a crowd pleaser.
You recently embarked on a UK and Ireland tour alongside Mallory Chipman. How was the experience of touring alongside Mallory, and what have been some of your highlights?
Maddisun: Wow, the tour was incredible. After coming home, my head was definitely in the clouds. We played 13 shows across Ireland/England/Scotland, and each show/venue was unique and special! Met so many amazing people and saw a lot of sacred land and heritage. We rented a car, so driving through the English/Scottish countryside was really something! I will say, the UK has the BEST gas station/road stops I’ve ever seen. I think they are like known for it! Playing music to connected audiences each night was such a highlight, as was getting to watch Mallory and her band perform every night. She’s so refined and talented. I have posted a lot about the tour on my social media, and have some special film shots I took that fans can view.
Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
Maddisun: Yeah – go for it!!!! Whatever you’re trying to achieve, just keep going and see it through. There are so many ups and downs with the music and the entertainment industry, it’s about how you ride those waves, and take care of yourself in between. At the end of the day, all we have is our health and our connection to others and the world around us, so be kind to yourself and everyone always!
