Upcoming Los Angeles-based dark-pop singer-songwriter Lucy Frost has released the brand new single “Prescription”!
This latest release is a deeply cathartic song that frames love as both a remedy and a mode of relapse. Written as a release of “pent-up, simmering anxiety,” the anthem reflects on an addictive, circular relationship that becomes agonizing to live without.
Lucy has kindly taken the time to chat with me regarding the release of her latest single & you can find her full interview below.
Hey Lucy, thank you for this interview. Can you start by introducing yourself to anyone unfamiliar with your music?
Lucy: Thanks for having me!! I’m a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Somerville, MA. I moved out to LA as an assistant music editor a few years back and quickly started getting into songwriting and production. I now write/produce for other artists and for sync companies, freelance score short films, as well as continue to build on my true passion: my artist project. My debut album is coming out this year and I’m super excited to share some of my most cherished songs with you!
When did you first discover your passion for music?
Lucy: My sister was gifted a piano for her birthday, and as a younger sibling I, of course, made it my own and rarely let her play it. I used to make up songs all the time, that’s when I discovered my love for composing (although calling them compositions that early would be a stretch). I’ve since taught myself voice, guitar and bass and now consider myself a songwriter before anything else.
Have you always wanted to pursue a career within the music industry?
Lucy: I always knew it would be a big part of my life, but I was never the kid to say, “I’m going to be a star when I grow up”. It wasn’t until high school that I realized how tangible this idea actually was. It’s really kudos to my older cousin, a successful producer and artist, who really put into perspective how possible it was to make this into a reputable career while maintaining the same passion I had when I was a kid.
How would you currently describe your musical style?
Lucy: I’d say with this new project on the way, my music is very alt-pop/indie leaning with a touch of rock, while still being very much singer/songwriter. It’s a blend of Gracie Abrams, Lola Young, Dora Jar, Wet Leg, Elliott Smith and many more.
You just released a new single “Prescription.” How did the idea for this song come together?
Lucy: This song was created with one of my favorite collaborators, Nick Schmidt. A few summers ago, when Nick recorded the guitar and I had these lyrics stuck in my head, “I took your word like a prescription.” I think we wrote it in a single sitting, one of those songs that just flowed so easily. My producer Mosaic has since then helped produce it out, with heavy influence of playing it live this past Summer in LA. So, it’s been a long time coming!
What does this song mean to you?
Lucy: “Prescription,” to me, is the sonic form of anxiety and discomfort bubbling up to the surface until it inevitably is released into a freeing flood of emotion. It’s very raw and vulnerable, with the intention that listeners will also experience a means of releasing their own pressures trapped inside.
What message would you like listeners to take from the song?
Lucy: It’s funny, because I like that there isn’t a happy ending as messed up as that sounds. I’m not coming to any sort of breakthrough/epiphany moment for how to get over this person, I’m actually going backwards, retrogressing. But that’s what I want listeners to take away, that it’s okay to linger in this state of denial. The song isn’t a how-to but rather a way to cope by screaming at the top of your lungs because it feels good!
If you could share some advice for someone looking to pursue a career within the music industry, what would it be?
Lucy: Oh man, it’s all highs and lows. There’s no plateau where everything is perfect- as artists we have to self-evolve and grow, it’s how we keep making music that inspires us. So don’t let the little things beat you up so much, it’s what makes the highs so worth it.
Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
Lucy: The fact that you’re reading this means you’re here taking a chance on an independent artist’s music without knowing anything about them. Your support and engagement are unmatched to us artists that aren’t in the spotlight just yet, thank you for listening!
