Brooklyn-based, transmasc nonbinary singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and self-producing artist Baileigh Jane’s shares the new single, “Who Are You”!
As a transmasc nonbinary artist originally from Jacksonville, Florida and now based in Brooklyn, Baileigh Jane publicly debuted their solo project after coming out and beginning gender-affirming care. “Who Are You” marks the first release to feature harmonized vocals from both their pre and post-transition voice, turning the track into a literal and emotional time capsule. “One thing I love about a song like this is how much I’ve changed while writing, composing, producing, and performing it,” they say. “It captures where I started, where I am now, and how I’m choosing to share it.”
Originally written in 2020, “Who Are You” began as a folk song driven by a haunting fingerstyle guitar hook. Over time, it evolved into an alternative R&B track shaped by nostalgic soundscapes and soulful harmonies, drawing influence from artists like Faye Webster and Steve Lacy. Sliding guitar riffs, swelling dynamics, and a somber string outro create a slow-burning tension that lingers long after the song ends. “I wrote this song like one part ‘Can you trust them?’ and one part ‘Can you trust yourself?’” says Baileigh. “It might not give you answers, but it will definitely leave you searching for them.”
