INTERVIEW: Cati Landry Discusses The New Single “Overdrive”!

Upcoming indie folk singer-songwriter Cati Landry shares a brand new dreamy ballad for the lonely hearts club “Overdrive”.

Written by Cati Landry and produced by Neil Wogensen, Cati teams up with JD Carrera (steel guitar) and Parker Law (drums) for this incredibly personal ballad. Recorded at Little Crow Studio in Highland Park, L.A., this latest single centres around what it’s like to live in the aftermath of a personal tragedy.

Cati had kindly taken the time to talk with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding the brand new single & you can find the full interview below.

Hey Cati, thank you so much for this interview. Can you start by introducing yourself to readers who might be unfamiliar with your music?

Cati: Hey, my name’s Cati Landry, I’m a born and raised daughter of the Pacific Northwest, currently living in Vancouver.

When did you first discover your passion for music?

Cati: Music’s been a real constant in my life. I don’t come from a family with a musical background, but both my parents listened to music all the time, like everything from Johnny Cash to Frank Sinatra to Nirvana, so I was surrounded by it and very connected to music from the get go. When I was about 7, I discovered I could sing and did some performances at my school and in my small town, and it really brought me out of my shell.

Have you always known you wanted to pursue a career within the music industry?

Cati: Finding a way to live and work as an artist has always been a North Star for me. I think my vision for what that could mean has changed and evolved. Growing up, I trained as a classical and jazz vocalist, and often performed 5 nights a week, so I think for a while I thought I might take a more traditional path. When I was a teenager, I started feeling a bit constrained by that and I thought, now I want to learn to write songs and tell my own story. Being a songwriter is a way to marry my two great loves, singing and storytelling.

How would you currently describe your musical style?

Cati: Ethereal, melancholic, poetic, and warm.

You recently shared the brand new single “Overdrive”. How did the idea for the song come together?

Cati: I was going through a hard time, and I started writing it as a conversation with someone that I’d lost… all the questions I’d like to ask them, the things I wish I could tell them because I know they’d understand better than anyone, and then the biggest question of all, which is really…when you lose someone where is all that love in your heart go? In the thick of that pain, how can you go on?

The song centres around an aching confession of love and loss. What did it mean to you to include this in a song?

Cati: Yeah, it’s a really vulnerable song. I’m highly sensitive and always have been, but also really pride myself on being strong and independent, and so I think I’ve come to value the moments where a song helps me let that guard down and let that more soft side of me show. There’s some lyrics in there that I didn’t even know I was carrying around until I gave voice to them—like the one “did I run out of time?” and then you start feeling more free for having brought those fears up to the light. I think now that’s so often the spark of magic I look for in a song when I’m writing.

Did you always plan to release this song?

Cati: I did but I knew I had to work with someone I trusted, because it’s a special song to me. After I made my first single “Mind’s Eye” with Neil Wogensen, who’s a producer I met in LA, I knew he would be a good fit because he’s such a warm person and brings the right energy to the process.

What is something you would love listeners to be able to take from this song?

Cati: Being sensitive is a gift. It’s an appreciation for the richness and depth of being alive, and although this song has pain in it, I’ve learned to find a beauty in feeling everything so deeply. If you’re going through a hard time right now or have lost somebody, I hope this song can be a comfort to you.

Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?

Cati: You rock! Thank you for supporting independent artists and our stories. Go listen to Overdrive and my other songs, and if you feel so inclined I would love to hear from you. Xoxo.
