Upcoming soul-pop singer-songwriter Lily Lane shares the brand new cheeky anthem “Higher!”, ahead of her upcoming EP “Domesticated” next week.
This latest single centres around finding calm in the chaos and rising above the noise. It’s around taking a break from the rollercoaster of life and being able to finally breathe for a moment.
Lily has kindly take the time to chat with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding the new single and a little insight into her highly anticipated EP. You can find the full interview below.
Hey Lily, thank you for this interview. You just released the new single “Higher!”. How did the idea for the song come together?
Lily: Thank you so much for wanting to dive deeper into my music and new project with me! I’m excited to chat with you. Honestly, the idea for Higher came from me needing a break from my own brain. I was overwhelmed, my friends were overwhelmed, my producer was overwhelmed, the world felt like too much, and I kept asking myself, “how do some people always have it all together? do they? or is that just an act and they are losing it too? “can any person take this all the time”? without needing something to get them out of their head? I needed a song that felt like an exhale — a little humor, a little honesty, and a moment to just breathe.
This latest release centres around finding calm in the chaos and rising above the noise. What inspired you to create a song around this?
Lily: First of all it’s so funny you describe it like that, because one of my favorite people, Stacy Igel — the designer behind Boy Meets Girl — wrote a book a few years ago called Embracing the Calm in the Chaos, and I loved it. She’s always inspired me. But honestly the real spark for the song was just how loud life feels right now. The news, the pressure, the expectations, the divisiveness and negative rhetoric from politicians especially our President — it’s a lot coming at all of us all the time. I reached a point where I needed a song that helped me breathe and rise above all that noise instead of getting swallowed by it. Higher came directly from that feeling.
Did you always plan to release the song as a single?
Lily: No, I didn’t always plan to release Higher! as a single. I definitely didn’t plan for it to be the last single before the EP either. That spot was supposed to go to a song called Amnesia. But I played Higher! for a few people I love and trust — like the girls from Blunt Besties and my closest friends — and they all said the same thing: “This song is so you. This song is so us. Don’t be afraid you’re going to turn people off with your truth. Release it.” So I did. It felt honest, it felt timely, and it felt like the right kind of vulnerable to put out into the world.
What does this song personally mean to you?
Lily: I love this song it’s on my “wake & bake” playlist for the days I get up on the wrong side of the bed. I love performing this one, it feels like we’re all just hanging out together having a “kick back” or whatever. This song feels like what hanging out with me and my friends is like when one of us texts the other “I’m crashing out” or “I need you.” Personally to me this song is one of my best friends saying “it’s going to be okay,” and passing me a joint.
If listeners could take something from this song, what would you like to be?
Lily: I want listeners to feel totally free to turn their brain off and just vibe to this one. If life gets to be too much, please be kind to yourself. Don’t beat yourself up for feeling like you’re losing it sometimes. This world is insane right now, and honestly you’re doing an amazing job coping with all the madness. And if you ever feel judged — by others or by yourself — for whatever you do to calm down, whether that’s smoking a joint, texting your ex, retail therapy, or actual therapy, I hope this song reminds you that you’re not alone. We can rise above those overwhelmed, negative feelings together.
This is the final preview from the upcoming EP, Domesticated (November 28th). What does this EP mean to you, and what can listeners anticipate from its release?
Lily: Domesticated is the final preview of the EP, and this project means a lot to me because it represents a kind of adulthood I never expected to grow into. Not the perfect or traditional version, but the version that actually fits my life. It is about choosing stability, choosing love, and choosing routines that feel right for me. Listeners can expect music that makes you move whether its dancing or just tapping your foot or putting your lighter up. They can expect a lot of honesty and a look behind the curtain on what a lot of people like to present as “Happily Ever After”. There are fun moments, emotional moments, and a real look at what being a partner and a person figuring things out actually feels like. It is warm, expressive, and very true to who I am now.
Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
Lily: Thank you for giving my music and this interview a read, I would love to connect with you more and hear what you think of the music after you hear it so please feel free to reach out I try to respond to every message I get- if you are giving my music your time I want to give you my time to say thank you!
