Upcoming group Adult Leisure recently shared their brand new single The Rules’, ahead of their debut album ‘The Things You Don’t Know Yet’, arriving on October 3rd 2025.
The song follows ‘See Her’, May’s collaboration with longtime The 1975 / Sam Fender collaborator John Waugh, and the album’s previous singles ‘Dancing Don’t Feel Right‘, ‘Kiss Me Like You Miss Her‘and ‘Borderline‘, which saw support from BBC Radio 6’s Indie Forever Show, The Line of Best Fit, Pop Journal, Fresh on the Net and multiple Spotify editorial playlists with ‘Borderline‘ being used to open an E4 Made In Chelsea episode, their first national TV sync placement.
‘The Rules‘ was recorded and mixed with Ollie Searle at Humm Studios and mastered by John Webber (David Bowie, Duran Duran, Coach Party) and sees guest vocals from Jess Chivers. The song pulls you in from the very first note, expertly mixing rich, vibrant synths, lush guitar lines, driving rhythms and anguished vocals to deliver the perfect 80’s movie soundtrack, once again showing that this is a band that exists completely outside of time.
Adult Leisure has kindly taken the time to talk about the group came together, as well as getting to know the artists behind the music. You can find out what they had to say below.
Hey Adult Leisure, thank you for your time. Can you start by introducing yourselves?
Hi, guys thanks for having us! We have myself (Neil, vocals), Dave (guitar), Nathan (drums) and Luke (bass).
How did the idea to form the group come together?
We had all known each other for years playing in bands in Bristol’s indie scene and during 2020s lockdown in the UK, I think all of our previous projects had finished the year previous and we were itching for something new. Then after a few messages, Dave sending me ideas of stuff he had been working on and a pint in our local (once lockdown had finally chilled out and you could have a pint less than a metre away from each other of course), we decided to get in a room and play some music and the rest is history.
What inspired the name Adult Leisure?
Depending on who you talk to in the band, it can be anything from being inspired by Bowie’s Teenage Wildlife, to just a name in a list of names that we stuck our finger on and went with. I prefer however to think of it as just a slightly naughty name that grabs peoples attention and people would probably be a bit cautious with typing in to google, wary of what it might bring up in their ever secretive search history.
How would you currently describe your musical style?
‘Melodic-alternative indie’ I think a music journalist wrote once, which isn’t too bad. I’d probably say however, we write happy music for sad people.
On July 25th, you’ll release the new single “The Rules”. How did you come up with the idea for the song?
The idea for ‘The Rules’ actually started life as a bit of a tongue-in-cheek voice note in the band WhatsApp. Dave sent over this ‘Islands in the Stream’-esque melody back in December 2023, and loved it instantly. Around that time, we were listening to Blossoms “to do list after the break-up” on repeat and really wanted to capture that feeling of a relationship teetering on the edge, but from both perspectives. It evolved from there into something that felt both nostalgic and emotionally raw.
The song is from the upcoming album “The Things You Don’t Know Yet”. What can listeners anticipate from the songs behind the album?
The themes running through the album lean into social commentary, but also explore grief, loss, nostalgia, and love. We started writing it back in 2023, and looking back now, the songs really feel like a chapter of our lives as a band. There’s a sense of growth, reflection, and a snapshot of where we’ve been emotionally and creatively over the last couple of years
What do you hope listeners will take from the musical journey of this forthcoming album?
We hope it stands as a statement of who we are and what we’re about – not just musically, but personally too. It’s a reflection of everything we’ve felt, questioned, and celebrated over the last couple of years, and we’d love for listeners to feel that honesty and connection in the journey of the album.
Now, let’s find out more from the people behind the music. How did you first discover your love for music?
I’m sure it varies for all of us, however, I think mine came from car journeys with my parents, Motown classics and Simply Red being blared through our car speakers, it got me hooked! Then, I guess it was getting toy microphones for Christmas and getting up, singing and dancing like an idiot for anyone that would listen! Not much changes there.
What are some of the things you enjoy outside of music?
I think for all of us, it’s most likely following the football. Dave and I are Arsenal fans, Luke’s a Liverpool fan and Nath is a Man Utd fan (try not to feel too sorry for him).
What three words would you use to describe each other?
Luke – non, fucking, stop.
Neil – sensitive, confident, tequila.
Nath – pragmatic, bongos, pizza.
Dave – savant, nostalgic, guzzler.
Who are some of your favourite musicians?
We’re all huge Prince fans, along with The Smiths, but right now, we cannot get enough of MK Gee – honestly, he’s incredible.
What’s a random fact about yourself that not many people know?
Dave’s snoring is so bad, when we shared a room in Paris, I (Neil) had to sleep in the shower, just to get a few hours kip.
If you could possess a superpower for a day, what would you choose & how would you use it?
The power to freeze time and live in the moment for a little longer – life moves so fast, if you don’t stop to look around once in a while, you might miss it.
What piece of advice has always stuck with you?
Do a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.
