INTERVIEW: Ren Genevieve Discusses The Release Of Her Debut EP “tongue tied”!

Upcoming pop singer-songwriter Ren Genevieve shares her debut EP, “tongue tied“. Composed of five deeply vulnerable and authentic songs, she bravely puts her heart and soul on her sleeve in each track. The EP invites listeners to join the artist in this shared experience of growing up, an era of inviting change but also being afraid of what’s to come.

This EP journeys through the lens of Ren Genevieve’s eyes as a young adult, featuring variations of “snapshots of emotion”.

Ren has kindly taken the time to chat with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding the creation of “tongue tied” and what the EP means to this talented artist. You can check out the full interview below.

Hey Ren, thank you so much for this interview. Can you start by introducing yourself to anyone unfamiliar with your music?

Ren: Thank you so much for having me. I’m so stoked to chat with you. My music blends intimate, introspective lyrics with layered and expansive soundscapes and expressive vocals. My writing explores a variety of themes because my songs are inspired by the things that are happening to me and around me.

When did you first discover your passion for music?

Ren: I was really little – maybe around 2, possibly a little before. My parents say I started singing as soon as I could talk. I have always loved to sing and loved music. I went to a music and dance camp for the first time when I was 2.5 years old, and we put on a show for all of our parents and I loved every second of it. I think that experience really cemented that music was something I really loved and wanted to do all the time.

Have you always wanted to pursue a career within the music industry?

Ren: Always. I have always wanted to be a singer, and this has provided me with various opportunities throughout my life to explore and understand different areas within the music industry, which has helped me to grow my artistry and expand my ideas about the kind of career I want to have in this industry. At my core, I have always loved to tell stories through music, and wanted to pursue a career in the music industry that would enable me to do that.

How would you currently describe your musical style?

Ren: Layered, introspective, evocative, and playful.

You just released your brand new EP, “tongue tied,” How did the idea for the EP come together?

Ren: I write constantly. There were several experiences that I had in which I wished I had said something different in the moment or wanted the opportunity to say what I really thought and felt about particular people and situations in my life. So, I started writing songs full of all those things that I wanted to say or wished I had said. Through this writing process, I realised that these songs were connected by the concept of being tongue tied or on the receiving end of someone else being tongue tied, which sparked the concept for the EP. Then the EP started to grow from there.

The EP features five songs that explore the “what-ifs” of young adulthood. What did it mean to you to create a soundtrack to growing up?

Ren: It was a really cathartic experience. I feel like, in a way, I had a really cool opportunity to pay homage to these younger versions of myself and the people in my life. I had so much fun creating this soundtrack, where all of these versions of myself get to live together and be in conversation with each other.

What advice would you share with someone facing the challenges of growing up?

Ren: Follow your instincts. You won’t always be right. You will make mistakes. These mistakes become things that you learn and grow from in the moment, and, in the future, become great stories…and even better songs! 🙂

What does this album personally mean to you?

Ren: This album means a lot. These songs are letting listeners into my inner world, and opening up the pages of my diary. I grew a lot as a person over the course of working on this album, and I learned so much about myself as an artist throughout this whole process. This album will always have a really special place in my heart and in my story as an artist.

If listeners could take something away from this EP, what would you like it to be?

Ren: The moments in which we are tongue tied or on the receiving end of someone else being tongue tied are the moments from which we learn and grow the most.

Are there any songs that did not make the EP that we could see released at a later date?

Ren: There are quite a few songs that did not make the EP…This EP is not everything that I ever said, and I really love some of the tracks that did not make the EP. So, that could definitely be a possibility.

What advice would you offer to someone looking to pursue a career within the music industry?

Ren: Focus on your talent. Stay curious about your talents, your craft, music, and the industry. Learn as much as you can about every aspect of the industry. Always remember why you loved music to begin with, and let that passion drive you forward. Keep listening to music – all kinds of music. It really does help you to develop your taste and ultimately find your sound. Don’t let the negativity and rejection discourage you. If you believe it’s possible, it is possible!

Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
