Indie-folk five-piece Bottlemoth is hyping up excitement for the release of their upcoming debut album ‘Even Us Ghosts’ due for release on October 17th 2024.
Their debut full-length was written and produced by the band, with additional recording with Joe Marsh at Orchard Studios and mixing by Adrian Hall (Tori Amos, Bess Atwell, Nova Twins, Cassia).
Lyrically, the album explores contemporary themes, digging deep into the complexities of living in your twenties, such as coming into your own independence, heartbreak, returning home, navigating mental health and celebrating love, friendships and those who matter most.
Bottlemoth has kindly taken the time to chat with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding the upcoming release of their album. You can find the full interview below.
Can you start by introducing yourselves to readers unfamiliar with your music?
Bottlemoth: Hey all, we are Bottlemoth. We are an indie rock band based across the SW of England, inspired by bands like Manchester Orchestra, Frightened Rabbit, Wonder Years, Jimmy Eat World – to name a few. We are releasing our debut album this October.
How did the idea to form the band come together?
Bottlemoth: We formed in January, though had been in projects together before. We all are big music fans, and grew up in a strong gigging scene. This year we’ve been playing our first shows, whilst releasing our first singles – the response has been magic
What inspired the name Bottlemoth?
Bottlemoth: We wanted a name that meant nothing now, but hopefully something later. We’ve all been in bands that were hard to Google, or had other bands with the same name – which just adds another layer of challenges when trying to create an identity. We were pushing words together for hours around a table, and when Bottlemoth was said aloud it just stuck
How would you currently describe your musical style?
Bottlemoth: Indie rock/folk is a good genre header. Our music is lyrically driven, with an emphasis on dynamics. Influences are probably a touch heavier than we are for now, but working to carve our own sound without reinventing the wheel.
On October 17th, you’ll release the debut album “Even Us Ghosts”. How did the idea for this album come together?
Bottlemoth: I was learning how to record and produce through YouTube, and a few of us had made an EP together under another name honing that craft. When Chess and I moved house, there was an old coal shed that I wanted to turn into a DIY space for recording. The songs started coming together faster than we thought and we got to work on an album.
What are some of the influences behind the songs featured on the album?
Bottlemoth: The main theme across the record is life through your twenties. How we need to adapt to all the changes that happen so quickly. It’s about making the most of the hand you’re dealt, telling your friends you love them as often as you can, and becoming the people we’re meant to be.
What are some of your favourite songs to feature on the tracklist?
Bottlemoth: At the moment we’ve just released Landslides (people change), which has been great to share. It was my favourite to record and arrange. Tattoo, which was our first single, is perhaps the one most akin to our influences. The album has a real ebb and flow, very proud of all tunes on it.
Are there any songs that did not make this album that we could see released in the future?
Bottlemoth: I think we whittled around 25 songs and ideas, down to 10 that made the album. There are still ideas I like from those others, so maybe versions will feature on a future release. I’ve been really inspired this year though and have a pool of songs in the works too, so it’s hard to say what album 2 looks like for now. Sometimes songs come together in 20 mins, sometimes they take way longer.
What would you like listeners to take from the album?
Bottlemoth: We hope that our songs resonate with you. They’ve been super fun to put together, and we can’t wait to do it all again.
What does this album personally mean to you?
Bottlemoth: Making an album has been a bucket list item since I was a kid. Even if no one were to pick up a copy, the achievement of creating it has been a massive feat. Excited to get back on the road!
Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
Bottlemoth: Thanks for reading our little interview and hope you enjoy listening to our album released on 17th October. We’ve vinyl and merch available to pre-order if you’re a fan, and 3 singles already released online. Excited to share this music with you!
