Hey Sarah, thank you so much for this interview. Can you start by introducing yourself to readers who might be unfamiliar with your music?

Sarah: Hey Jess, yeah that’s no problem at all. So I’m an Irish singer-songwriter currently based in Berlin.   My journey in music began at BIMM Bristol, where I dedicated myself to honing my craft. My sound blends elements of blue-eyed soul with a distinct trip-hop feel. My songwriting is deeply influenced by what’s happening in the world around us, and I’m passionate about delving into deeper topics through my music. Whether it’s social issues, personal struggles, or reflections on the human experience.

When did you first discover your love for music?

Sarah: Music has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, our house was always filled with music, and if not at home, it was in the car during family trips. However, my love for music wasn’t just about the sounds; it was about the emotions and experiences it evoked. I distinctly remember moments of being completely consumed by the music pouring out of the radio. Whether it was the electrifying rhythms of James Brown or the harmonious melodies of The Beach Boys, each song had the power to transport me to another world, stirring deep emotions within me. It was these moments of connection and transcendence that ignited my passion for music.

Have you always felt that you wanted to pursue a career within the music industry?

Sarah: No, my journey towards pursuing a career in the music industry wasn’t always clear-cut. Initially, I found myself following a different path, doing a science degree actually. However, deep down, I knew that wasn’t where my true passion lay. Despite the uncertainty and pressure to pursue a more conventional career path, I couldn’t shake the feeling that music was where I belonged.

Ultimately, I made the decision not to turn my back on my musical aspirations. It wasn’t an easy choice, and I was aware that the road ahead is going to be challenging. Yet, I firmly believe that following my passion for music will lead to a more fulfilling and authentic life.

How would you currently describe your musical style?

Sarah: At present, I would describe my musical style as a fusion of various influences, I have a distinctive jazzy voice. My songwriting sort of echoes that to blue-eyed soul, my music carries an emotive depth. However, I also incorporate elements from the realm of trip-hop, adding a modern and atmospheric dimension to my sound.

You just released your new single “Troubled Mind”. How did the idea for this song come together?

Sarah: ‘Troubled Mind’ came together in a pretty interesting way. I was inspired by James Joyce’s book ‘Dubliners’, which is all about people feeling stuck in life. I wanted to capture that feeling in a song. Plus, I was writing during lockdown when everything felt so uncertain. With the Black Lives Matter protests happening and us going back into lockdown, there was a lot on my mind.

Personally, I was feeling lost and stuck in a bad living situation, so I could really relate to the characters in the book. It was like fiction meeting reality! The song became a way for me to express all those mixed-up feelings about what was going on in the world and in my own life.

So, ‘Troubled Mind’ isn’t just a song – it’s a reflection of all the crazy stuff happening around us and how it made me feel. It’s about feeling trapped and trying to find a way out, both in the story and in real life.

This song centres around some influential subjects, such as addiction, domestic abuse, & the struggles of neglected youth. What does it mean to you to share this song with the world?

Sarah: Sharing this song with the world means everything to me. It’s not just about putting out another catchy tune; it’s about shedding light on real-life issues that often get swept under the rug. Addiction, domestic abuse, and the struggles of neglected youth are all too common, yet they’re often overlooked or avoided in mainstream conversations.

For me, ‘Troubled Mind’ is a way to confront these tough topics head-on. It’s about acknowledging the reality of the human condition, even when it’s messy and uncomfortable. Music has this incredible power to connect people and spark conversations.

Ultimately, it’s about bringing these issues out of the shadows and showing that they deserve our attention and empathy.

What message would you like listeners to take from this song?

Sarah: I want listeners to know that it’s okay to talk about the tough stuff. Life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, and that’s okay. I hope ‘Troubled Mind’ shows them that they’re not alone in their struggles, whether it’s addiction, domestic abuse, or feeling neglected.

I want people to feel seen and heard when they listen to this song. And I hope it encourages them to reach out for help if they need it, or to be there for someone else who might be going through a tough time.

Basically, I want ‘Troubled Mind’ to be a reminder that it’s okay to be real and vulnerable and that sometimes, just knowing that someone else understands can make all the difference.

This song is from your forthcoming EP, “Social Paralysis.” What are some of the things we can anticipate from the EP?

Sarah: It’s a collection of songs that really dive deep into some of the big issues we’re facing today. You can expect more of that soulful sound that you heard in “Troubled Mind.”

Each song on the EP explores different aspects of social and personal struggles. From navigating relationships to grappling with societal pressures, “Social Paralysis” covers some ground. But through it all, there’s this thread of hope and resilience running through the music.

When can listeners expect to hear the new EP & what platforms will it be available on?

Sarah: The EP has this sort of melancholic vibe to it, you know? It’s all about exploring those bigger issues that we’re facing as individuals and as a society. But even though it’s heavy stuff, there’s this underlying sense of hope woven throughout the music.

So whether you’re in the mood for some soulful introspection, “Social Paralysis” will be there for you.

As for where you can find it, it will be available on all the major streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and more.

What message would you offer to someone looking to pursue a career within the music industry?

Sarah: Sure, I’m still on the journey myself, and I’m not exactly where I want to be just yet. But hey, every step forward is a win in my book. So if you’ve got a dream and a passion for music, don’t let anything hold you back. Keep hustling, keep grinding, and who knows? You may just meet the right people who will make it work.

Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?
