INTERVIEW: KTJ & CARLY Discusses Their Latest Single “Shitty People”!

Dynamic singer/songwriter & producer duo KTJ & CARLY continue making waves amongst the global music scene through a host of memorable songs, including the hit singles “Pink Ferrari” & “Nice Guy But”.

Now, this talented duo are kicking off their first release of 2023 with the brand new single “Shitty People”, which is the first single from their upcoming body of work.

Inspired by a handbag with the phrase “Stop Stressing Over Shitty People,” KTJ & CARLY encourage listeners to overcome the need to win over & compromise for people who don’t deserve it.

KTJ & CARLY have kindly taken the time to talk with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding their brand new single, along with their upcoming body of work. Check out the full interview below.

Hey KTJ & CARLY, thank you so much for this interview. Can you start by introducing yourself to readers who might be unfamiliar with your music?

KTJ & CARLY: Of course! We are KTJ & CARLY. We are identical twin sisters, and we make music together. Most of our music typically centres around the concept of identity and how the outside world affects that. Our main goal when writing music is to create a piece of art that makes someone feel understood and heard. You aren’t alone in your feelings, and we hope that when you listen, you feel seen… we also hope that you can dance and have fun with it.

How would you currently describe your musical style & how do you feel that it has evolved during your musical journey?

KTJ & CARLY: We make pop music; however, we are influenced by lots of different genres… rock, R&B, EDM, and blues. We hope to constantly try new things and experiment with a left-of-centre pop that stays our sound. I think the way we have evolved is not being afraid to try something new. There are constantly new technologies and ways to create music, and on the other side, our inspiration is constantly shifting as we grow as humans and artists. I think that has allowed us to be more experimental with our songs while keeping it our sound.

You just released the brand new single “Shitty People”. How did the idea for this song come together?

KTJ & CARLY: We wrote this song with Austin Wolfe A.K.A. OSTON. We were sitting in our session talking about our lives, and what was going on in the world to bring up a good song starter. On the door, hanging was a tote bag that I had bought from the trading post. It says on the front, “Stop stressing over shitty people” That really resonated with everything we had been talking about that morning. We saw that and immediately knew. It was the perfect phrase to wrap up how all of our stress and worries typically are because of someone else… trying to be cool, trying to be the best, being constantly productive and perfect… and instead of trying so hard for other people, we should try hard for ourselves. That was the original inspiration for the song.

Did you always plan to release this song as a single?

KTJ & CARLY: We didn’t really plan for this song specifically. There are a lot of other songs in our EP that were contenders but this one really resonated with all of our live crowds and felt that it made sense to release this first.

How would you compare the creative process behind this song & your earlier releases?

KTJ & CARLY: I think this song like a lot of our other songs was written on just a piano. Our writing process changes every time… sometimes we produce first, simultaneously, or later on. This one felt like it needed to be strong on the piano alone before we produced it.

What does this song mean to each of you?

CARLY: To me, this song represents liberation. Liberation from the chains that we put on ourselves and blame on other people.  At the end of the day, the pressure we put on ourselves at the expense of our mental health to be perfect is controlled by us. This song to me is the anthem of letting go.

KTJ: It’s a reminder not to people please no matter how badly the urge to is. It’s important to put yourself first sometimes.

If listeners could take something from this song, what would you like it to be?

KTJ & CARLY: If the listeners could take anything away from this song, I would hope that first and foremost, they feel heard. They can think, “oh someone else feels this way too. I’m not alone in this.” I hope they can hear it and realize that it’s okay not to be the “main character.” It’s okay to not have your shit together. It’s okay to take people out of your life who only cause stress. It’s okay to stop living for other people and start living for yourself.

This is the first single of your upcoming work, due this summer. What can you tell us about this upcoming project?

KTJ & CARLY: What we can say about our upcoming project is that it is the pinnacle of being alone with your thoughts. What you may experience through your head when you look back on your life and experiences if you were the last person left on earth. All about living in your own head.

Finally, is there a message that you would like to share with the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?

KTJ & CARLY: Right now, in our lives, I think the biggest lesson we have learned in the past year is that trying new things outside of the box is always good, even if it feels weird. I think with our music, we have really tapped into trying new things. Because if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. The world isn’t going to end. ALSO, go stream shitty people! Scream it at the top of your lungs ❤ and stay tuned for a whole new body of work coming soon. 🙂
