INTERVIEW: Ela Ozturk Discusses The Release Of The New Single “Roots”!

Upcoming singer-songwriter Ela Ozturk explores a unique blend of Blues, Jazz, R&B, Blue-eyed soul, & pop to create a memorable sound that makes her an exciting artist to watch.

Following the recent success of her second single, “Sweet Nothing”, Ela has unveiled the brand new single, “Roots”.

Hey Ela, thank you for this interview. Can you start by telling readers a little bit about yourself?

Ela: My name is Ela Ozturk. I am a Turkish-American singer-songwriter. I grew up in San Francisco, California, and my childhood was filled with music. I was encouraged by my late father to sing, write, and perform. My father introduced me to many different artists that shaped my sound. I also grew up as a choir kid and loved performing in school.

When did you first discover your passion for music?

Ela: Good question! Honestly, music has been the greatest love of my life since I can remember. I started singing at two-years-old, writing songs, and playing the piano at six years old. I do remember being in middle school and starting to say out loud that I wanted to be a singer when I grew up. I think that’s when it clicked for me.

Have you always known that you wanted to pursue a career within the music industry?

Ela: Yes, I did. Being a professional singer-songwriter has been my childhood dream since I can remember. I’ve had tunnel vision toward pursuing a career in music.

How would you currently describe your musical style?

Ela: I would say my musical style is soulful, emotional, and empowering.

You just released your poetic new single “Roots”. How did the idea for this song come together?

Ela: “Roots” focuses on rebuilding yourself after someone has broken your connection with who you are. The song is a ballad with full choirs and piano and grows easily from pain to power. The lyrics describe a comeback story. “I’m coming back to my Roots, the me before you, the calm before your storm, the light before your darkness. I’m returning, I’m returning, back to my Roots, I’m coming back, I’m coming back, I’m coming back”. I wrote this song after experiencing heartbreak. It gave me the closure I needed to heal.

Did you always plan to release “Roots” as a single?

Ela: Actually, “Roots” was supposed to be an EP, but I felt the song needed to be a single and that I needed to put out more singles before I could put out an EP. Hopefully, I will put out an EP in the next year or two.

What does this song personally mean to you?

Ela: This is by far my favourite song I’ve ever written. Creating this song for me was a breakthrough as an artist and songwriter. I wrote from a place I’ve never written from before and really surprised myself. This song is really special to me, and I’m so excited for it to be out in the world!

If listeners could take anything from this song, what would you like it to be?

Ela: I hope listeners can feel inspired to step into their power and remember their “Roots” and what makes them who they are, and I hope this song serves as a comeback anthem for anyone who feels they lost themselves and want to rebuild again.

What advice would you offer to someone who was looking to pursue a career within the music industry?

Ela: My advice for anyone looking to pursue a career within the music industry would be to be yourself and find a community of artists that you can grow with and learn from.
