Norweigan dream / Indie-pop band MARBLES continue to create waves amongst the music scene through their ear-catching sound & unique musical versatility.
Not long ago, MARBLES unveiled their brand new single “One Of A Kind”, which is the second taste of their forthcoming LP, which will be released in early 2023.
MARBLES have kindly taken the time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution about their latest single, along with was listeners can anticipate regarding their upcoming LP. You can find the full interview below.
Hey MARBLES, thank you so much for this interview. Can you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourselves?
Hello!! Thank you so much for making a Q&A with us 🙂
MARBLES is an indie-pop group from Oslo, Norway and consists of Ferdinand and Marcus Widmer (Vocals and Guitar), Marius Ringen (drums) and Adrian Sandberg (Synthesizer). (Shout-out to the live-buddies Axel Øksby and Sebastian Sandved on bass and tech-duties. They make us sound better live.) We’re all from a suburban area South of Oslo called Kolbotn. Two of us are brothers, and the two others are old friends from growing up. We grew up on rock music, everything from Led Zeppelin, Yes and Pink Floyd to more heavy stuff like Black Sabbath, Metallica, Rage and Tool, very different stuff to what we are making now. I think what makes us a bit special is that we have gone through pretty much every genre. And we have a lot of confidence in what we’re doing, at the same time we are aware of the fact that we are not making music for everyone (most likely) and we are extremely happy with every little praise that we may get.
How did the idea to form the group first come together?
As mentioned, being from Norway’s black metal capital, Kolbotn, keyboardist Adrian Sandberg, guitarist Marcus Widmer and vocalist/bassist Ferdinand Widmer already had their fair share of heavy music before drummer Marius Ringen joined the group in 2018. Actually, Adrian and Ferdinands first meetup at a music townhouse in Kolbotn led to tears, when they realized how good a musical match they were. Both had a rare taste in music at the time and place. Marcus is Ferdinand’s big brother and has been there from the start. When Marius joined he added some refreshing perspective and a collective shift in music mentality was the birth of MARBLES.
How would you currently describe your musical style?
Coming from many musical backgrounds we were never sure about what we wanted to play, but after Marius joined and MARBLES became a thing, we wanted to take a more cheerful, dancy direction. It’s now more pop than rock, but also with some influence from hip hop and r&b, we would say.. 🙂 And we have been trying to improve our lyrics, going deeper into subjects that mean something for us. While the first debut album was more fun, flirty and (maybe) arrogant, we are trying to tell more with our new music. We always try to catch a “vibe” for each individual song, and develop that further. Our first single ‘European Dream’ is truly a testimony to this. A “one chord song” that is full of energy from that sound defining fall of 2018. Now One of a Kind is an example where we put that kind of guitar riffs on top of more “hip hop sounding” drums.
You have just released the brand new single “One Of A Kind”. How did the idea for this song come together?
Most of the vibe came directly from one of Ferdinand’s many brilliant demos. Marcus was fooling around with the guitar and that riff that really “solved the knot”. We wrote the lyrics together, on a late night at the studio/hangout place. “One of a Kind” is all about a specific type of relation. Sometimes your relationship with a best friend, a partner or family member might not last – despite an exceptionally strong bond. While it may be painful to accept, in some cases it’s for the better.
How would you compare the creative process of this song to your earlier releases?
As we were talking about, we are putting pressure on ourselves to improve the lyrics, going deeper into subjects, and One of a Kind is a good example. We are very happy with how the lyrics turned out, and how the single really feels very wholesome. It’s just one of our best and most complete songs, to be honest. We believe it really can make you feel, and that’s what we´re going for now.
Did you always plan to release “One Of A Kind” as a single?
As soon as we were in the middle of it we agreed that it was to be a single. Of course, we have made several great “single-candidates” since, but you know, at some point you have to settle on your original plan. It was never a doubt with One of a Kind though:)
What does this song personally mean to you?
All of us thought of someone specific as we wrote the lyrics. We didn’t mention them in particular, we just wanted to discuss and convey this specific feeling. Maybe the song will make you think of someone – maybe not. That’s ok. Our message with One of a Kind is that – sometimes It’s ok to lose contact with someone close in your life. Maybe you evolve differently or go down different paths. You come to the point in a relationship where both parts have moved on, and you´re still trying to accept it for a good thing. Doing your best to cherish their accomplishments in life. You’ll never find someone similar, and that’s just life. You still want the best for them. And you understand that “forever regretfulness” can be a curse.
This song is the second taster from your upcoming LP, what are some of the things that listeners can anticipate hearing on the LP?
You are going to hear tracks that are darker, more mellow, crazier, sweeter and harder. It’s going to be a proper journey, and we are trying to make it really stick with the listeners. Btw, the cover art for these singles is part of a collection we´ve gathered from one of our fathers. We’ve been inspired by this story – capturing a specific and beautiful moment in his life – taken in 1989. A frightening leap, full of doubt and anxiety, leading to a feeling of freedom and exhilarating reward. We are super excited to show more of that.
If listeners could take something from this song, what would you like it to be?
We hope that listeners will take something similar from the song as we have. As we wrote: maybe the song will make you think of someone – maybe not. That’s ok. Our message with One of a Kind is that – sometimes It’s ok to lose contact with someone close in your life. Maybe you evolve differently or go down different paths. You come to the point in a relationship where both parts have moved on, and you´re still trying to accept it as a good thing. Doing your best to cherish their accomplishments in life. You’ll never find someone similar, and that’s just life. You still want the best for them. And you understand that “forever regretfulness” can be a curse.
