Kiwi singer-songwriter PRINS has swiftly caught the attention of global listeners through a host of charismatically ear-catching compositions, which have received high praise from fans & critics alike.
‘Midnight Calling’ (Until Dawn) is the latest in a string of hits for the Christchurch-based artist, who launched into 2021 with the release of ‘Follow Me’, which hit number eight on the Hot New Zealand Singles Chart. ‘Basic Bitch’ followed, another instalment of PRINS’ unique brand of electro-pop.
PRINS has kindly taken the time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution regarding the latest release. You can check out the full interview below.
Hey PRINS, thank you so much for this interview. Can you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourself?
PRINS: Hey – thanks for the chat also! To sum it up in one sentence I am an electropop artist from New Zealand. I’ve been in the performing world my whole life with a background in dancing, acting, singing and modelling but have spent the last couple of years honing my craft and forcing on original music. I’ve spent a good 6 ish years in the live music scene so the stage is my home! I can’t wait to bring my live show to the UK.
When did you first discover your passion for music?
PRINS: Growing up music was always playing in our house from the minute I woke up so in hindsight it only seems natural that in some way performing arts would carry through into my adolescence. I have always been obsessed with music and I believe subconsciously have been trying to find a way to pursue a career with it.
How would you describe your musical style to someone unfamiliar with your music?
PRINS: My music style is definitely electro-pop. Although looking through my repertoire on Spotify you’ll also notice 2 Drum and Bass collabs and a house remix with UKs ‘Until Dawn’ which came out last week. I like to think about how songs would come across live so usually, my tracks have lots of energy!
You recently released the ‘Midnight Calling’ (Until Dawn Remix) on December 2nd. How did the idea for this remix come together?
PRINS: I’ve recently been connected to a great PR team in the UK who had the connection. They linked us together and we vibed really well! I’m super stoked with how it’s come together and ‘Until Dawns’ take on the track.
What does “Midnight Calling” mean to you personally?
PRINS: Midnight Calling to me actually marks the end of an era (and coincidentally the last release for 2021). I’ve been sitting on the track for a while so am happy and proud to see it out but have since been working with new producers outside of NZ. This is a first for me and I have a lot of exciting new music in store for 2022.
If listeners could take anything away from this song, what would you like it to be?
PRINS: Honestly, this is a song just to blast really loud! It’s just hit summer here in NZ but I’m sure your UK winter could do with a wee pick-me-up 😉
We’ve all been dealing with some serious life changes due to covid and this song hopefully will make you dance and forget about things for a while.
Do you have any further releases planned that you can tell us about?
PRINS: I am currently working on an EP in the background as well as some more collabs in 2022 – that’s all I can share haha! I’ve got my work cut out for me, 2022 is looking like a biggie.
What are some of the things you enjoy outside of music?
PRINS: I’m a big all-rounder but really love travelling, being outdoors, swimming, gym, being with family/friends, reading, partying, the list goes on. I only watched Netflix for the first time this year and I’ve never watched any series of anything – I’d much prefer being out and about.
If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
PRINS: Passionate, optimistic, personable.
What was the first album you ever listened to & do you still listen to it now?
PRINS: I don’t know if my memory goes back that far.. maybe the Eagles? America? Or later from my own choice, the ‘Barbie Pool Party’ CD I got for my birthday when I was about 10. I definitely don’t listen to that anymore but ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ was a banger.
