Interview: Dustin Chapman Discusses The Release Of His Upcoming Single “Slow Dance”!

Upcoming American country singer-songwriter Dustin Chapman is set to release his brand new single “Slow Dance” on June 30th & has kindly taken the time to speak with Fierce & Fabulous Revolution about his upcoming song.

Hey Dustin, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Can you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourself?

Dustin: Hey Jess! Thank you so much for featuring me. I am a singer/songwriter from Whiteville, North Carolina and country music is my passion. Thankfully I have seen steady growth with my music career, but along with that I have spent the past five years of my life facing an extremely rare esophageal disease called achalasia. Because of that, I try to use my talents to uplift those who listen and are fighting their own personal battles.

Have you always known that music was a career that you wanted to pursue?

Dustin: I was a freshman in high school and had my first solo, which was “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid, when I decided that music was what I wanted to pursue as a career. The applause and warm reaction gave me a feeling that I knew I wanted to experience for the rest of my life. Now, I am a high school music teacher and get to give students that same experience.

How would you describe your musical style to someone unfamiliar with your music?

Dustin: I definitely have influences from all across the board, but I would say my sound blends influences from country, blues, and gospel music. I definitely think my music leans itself to the modern country sound but is broad enough that it could pull in listeners from different genres.

You will be releasing your brand new single “Slow Dance” on June 30th, how did the idea to create this song come together?

Dustin: Honestly, this song came from a place of hurt as I was overcoming rejection–which happens a lot in the music industry–and wanted to write about it. I figured that a slow dance is something that the vast majority of people are familiar with, but more importantly, it’s something that allows you to drown out the world around you and focus on someone you love through an artform that showcases feeling and expression.

What would you consider to be the main inspiration behind this song?

Dustin: The main inspiration for me at the time was validation. I wanted to prove to myself that I could be content with myself and not have to worry about the approval of those around me. When I let go of those worries, this song came out and I am so proud of it. I think that right now especially, people can relate to this song. The lines “drown out a world that is nothing but jaded and move from side to side” is something that exemplifies letting go and doing something as simple as dancing to let the worries of the world slip away.

How would you compare the creative process behind this song to your previous releases?

Dustin: I typically write all of my music on piano, but this time I decided I wanted a song with a different type of rhythmic feel and a faster tempo, so I decided to write on guitar. This is actually my first time completely writing a song on guitar. With that in mind, the chords are much simpler than I usually use on piano, but I believe sometimes simple is good and it even relates to the message of the song.

What does the song personally mean to you?

Dustin: Personally, this song signifies simplicity and focusing on what and/or who you love.

If listeners could take away one message from this song, what would you like it to be?

Dustin: I would hope the listeners find their own personal correlation with this song. Ultimately, I would hope it helps them realize that taking time to decompress and focus on those you love is okay and necessary.

Finally, is there anything you would like to say the readers of Fierce & Fabulous Revolution?

Dustin: Thank you all for not only supporting me and my music, but for supporting Jess and her awesome blog. She is helping connect so many wonderful musicians to new people and I am fortunate to be one of those artists. I hope you continue to follow my journey on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram. Thank you all again for everything and God bless!
