Interview: Wez Devine & Ryan Dolan Discuss S.O.O.N “We are really excited to be releasing our new music as S.O.O.N”!

I am delighted to be bringing you an interview with the lovely Ryan Dolan & Wez Devine from S.O.O.N, about how the idea for S.O.O.N came together & their brand new single “We Get It Right”. You can read what they had to say below:

Hey guys. Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview. Could you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourselves?

Hey Jess, thank you for taking the time!

Well we are Wez and Ryan from Ireland and we’ve been making music together for around 6 years now and we are really excited to be releasing our new music as S.O.O.N

How did you guys first meet?

We met through Ryan’s brothers, who were already friends with Wez –

We were playing dodgeball (of all things) one evening and Ryan asked me if he could record some covers with me in my studio. I had no idea of the kind of talent he had at this stage but it wasn’t long after I heard him sing that I knew he was really good…kid has skills! Terrible dodge-ball player though!

Now, your new project S.O.O.N seems very exciting. Can you tell me how the idea for S.O.O.N came together?

We had been recording covers of some of the ‘big hits’ over the past year and with the audience on Spotify really starting to grow, we both felt it a good time to start putting out some original material again. The idea behind S.O.O.N is that it’s an outlet for the more electronic based pop and dance tracks, the fun and freindly stuff we’ve been working on – whereas Ryan’s new solo stuff, that’s already recorded and is on the way later this summer, is more singer/songwriter type tracks.

I have to say “We Get It Right” is a fantastic song. What was the inspiration behind the song?

Thanks so much, we’re delighted you like it! The groove of the song is inspired by the sound of the big pop tracks coming out of America like Major Laser, Chainsmokers, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber etc. Lyrically it’s dedicated to the people in our lives that make us want to be better and do better. It’s just about appreciating how lucky you are to have found someone to share your life with. For me that special someone is my fiancé and best friend Tracey, and I know for Ryan it’s his partner Ciaran, but we’re hoping that everyone can relate in some way.

Can you tell me more about what will we be seeing from S.O.O.N in the near future?

Sure! We have 2 x new S.O.O.N tracks on the proverbial cooker right now and we hope to release them in July and August. We are planning some live shows later this summer in Ireland so stay tuned to our social media for those updates!

A few years ago Ryan you represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest. Would you both consider entering the contest as S.O.O.N?

We actually both travelled to Malmo with the team and looking back on it now it was a great thing to experience! It would be great fun to do a second time and of course it’s always a real honor represent your home country in an event like that – so who knows, never say never!

Now, I thought it would be a fun idea to get to know you guys a little better, so what sort of things do you like to do in your spare time?

RYAN: In my spare time I like to hit the gym, I’ve been training since I was 16 off and on but it really helps me blow off some steam. I also love chilling with a few movies and load of junk food at the weekends. Play some golf occasionally too.

WEZ : I mostly just work on music, like all the time!!! Although I do like to work out a teeny-weeny bit. Oh, and I try to surf at least once a year. And I have 2 x German Shepherds who keep me busy.

Who are some of your biggest inspirations?

RYAN: My biggest musical inspiration would have to be Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury, been listening to them both since I was a 6 years old and love them.  My Mum and Dad would be my biggest inspiration in my life, they have always put me and my siblings first no matter what and always made sure we had the happiest childhood possible. They are amazing!

WEZ: From a musical perspective it’s James Brown, Michael Jackson and Bob Marley for me. Just how James Brown was so creative with it all, how Michael put it all together, and how Bob channelled the spirit of the universe when he sang! Outside music my biggest inspirations growing up were both my parents who always had my happiness and wellbeing in mind.
