With UMK 2017 right around the corner, the excitement for the contest is building up more and more everyday. And today I have had the chance to speak with one of the finalist from this years contest.
I have had the privilege to speak with one of the UMK 2017 finalists, Emma, about her upcoming performance in UMK, and getting to know a bit about herself, and how entering UMK came together. You can check out the interview below!
Hey Emma, first of all thank you so much for agreeing to this. Could you start of by telling me a little bit about yourself?
Emma: Thank you for having me! Well, I’m Emma from a small town called Kokkola in Finland now living in Stockholm Sweden where I work as a music teacher.
Massive congratulations on making the final of UMK. How did it feel when you found out you would be one of the finalists?
Emma: Thank you so much! I was so excited! I really couldn’t believe it! But I’ve been working so hard for this from the very start, so I was really happy that that work payed off! I have continued to work hard for the show, so let’s see what happens next week when the finals is!
Your song “Circle Of Light” is absolutely amazing. The lyrics & melody are incredibly catchy. Could you tell me a little about how the song came together? And what does it personally mean to you?
Emma: I called up Heidi Maria Paalanen and said that I would like to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest, do you know anyone who can help me. And she wanted to be in the project with me, so she gathered Saara Törmä, Aku Rannila and Jonas Olsso and they then interview me on what kind of a person I am and what kind of style I would like to sing.
The song is basically about facing your fears and staying strong and brave, and that you can do so with the help of your thoughts! You create your own personal Circle Of Light where you are safe. It’s basically what I have had to do in my own life and I think we all have had to in our own way, so this song means a lot to me.
Following on from the previous question, what was the inspiration behind entering “Circle Of Light” in to UMK 2017?
Emma: I heard that song last summer and when I heard it for the first time I knew right away that “this is the one”. So they didn’t even write any others songs for me. Circle Of Light just felt so right for UMK!
Have you followed Eurovision in the past? If so, what are some of your favourite songs from Eurovision?
Emma: Yes I have. I really think Sweden have always had great entrys for The Eurovision! But I really liked last years Jamala. I can’t really decide on which one is my favourite.
Now, I would like to ask a few questions to get to know you a bit better. How long have you been singing for? And when did you know that singing was what you wanted to do?
Emma: I’ve been singing ever since I could first start to talk. I’ve been singing at home for my parents and dancing around my house when I was a little kid. I think I always knew that this was something I wanted to do! I started very early taking singing lessons, and then I continued to study to become a vocal teacher later on so music has always been with me.
At the moment I’m sure you don’t really have much spare time on your hands. However, what sort of things do you like to do in you are not singing?
Emma: I like to spend time with the people I love. I like interior design and I like to make my home look nice because my home is where I feel safe and where I spend a lot of my time. And I also like to work out.
Now imagine “Circle Of Light” was turned into a duet. Which singer would you like to duet with on the song, and why?
Emma: Wow! Well if I could choose anyone dead or alive then it would be definitely Freddy Mercury. But someone who’s alive then I think I would like to sing it together with Beyonce!
Finally, what would it mean to you if you were selected to represent Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017?
Emma: It would mean the world to me! My biggest dream would come true!
